Big Owl by Natty Knits: Knitted Toy Pattern
Project Overview
Big Owl is an intermediate-level knitted toy design created by Clare Doornbos for Natty Knits. This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for creating a charming stuffed owl approximately 10 inches tall. The pattern offers versatility, as it includes instructions for knitting Big Owl as either a traditional stuffed toy or as a functional pajama case, allowing crafters to choose their preferred finished project.
What Is Being Made
The Big Owl pattern produces a three-dimensional knitted owl figure suitable for display, play, or storage. The design is compact and portable, making it an ideal project for knitters seeking to create handmade toys or decorative items. The dual-purpose nature of the pattern—enabling creation of either a stuffed toy or pajama case—adds flexibility for different end uses and gift-giving options.
Knitting Techniques Used
This pattern employs Short Row Shaping as a primary construction technique. Short row shaping creates three-dimensional form by working partial rows across the piece, which allows the knitter to build depth and sculptural qualities into the toy without requiring complex increases or decreases across the entire width. The technique involves creating deliberate loops of yarn through "yarn forward, turn work" maneuvers, which are then knitted together with the stitches above them on subsequent rows. This method is essential for achieving the owl's dimensional body structure.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The Big Owl pattern is constructed primarily using Garter Stitch, the most fundamental knit stitch pattern. Garter stitch is created by knitting every row, producing a textured, bumpy fabric with excellent elasticity and durability. This stitch choice makes the pattern accessible to intermediate knitters while providing a sturdy, stable fabric ideal for a stuffed toy that will withstand handling and potential play. The gauge for this project is 16 stitches and 32 rows per 4 inches in garter stitch.
Materials and Tools
Yarn: The pattern calls for bulky weight yarn in a main color (approximately 150 yards) and yellow yarn (approximately 20 yards for details). Bulky weight yarn works quickly and creates a substantial, huggable toy appropriate for the finished size.
Needles and Notions: US size 9 (5.5 mm) straight needles are used for the main body construction, with US size 9 (5.5 mm) double-pointed needles also listed in the materials. A tapestry needle is required for seaming and finishing. Additional embellishments include colored felt for eyes, embroidery floss or thread for sewing on eyes, and two 1-inch buttons (for the pajama case variation).
Stuffing: Fiberfill is specified as the filling material for the stuffed toy version, providing a soft, washable interior that maintains the toy's shape.
Finished Dimensions
The completed Big Owl measures approximately 10 inches tall, making it a compact, manageable size suitable for display on shelves, desks, or as a child's toy. This scale is also practical for gift-giving and storage.
Difficulty Level
Classified as an intermediate project, Big Owl is designed for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to expand their technique repertoire. While garter stitch itself is beginner-friendly, the introduction of short row shaping elevates the challenge level, making this pattern an excellent stepping stone for knitters progressing beyond basic stockinette and simple shaping methods.
