Product Description

Big Knitting was designed to mimic super-chunky yarn in a stockinette fabric texture, using regular DK yarn and simple rope cables. The beanie looks luxurious and thick but without the bulk (and expense) of real super- chunky yarn. A wide folded brim in a contrasting colour adds another touch of luxury and depth to this cosy wintery staple, peeking out below the cable texture.

Uses 240-260 yards of DK 8ply merino or similar. Sample shown in White Gum Wool organic merino from Tasmania, Australia (hand dyed by Nunnaba Artisan Yarn). You will need a 3.5mm and 4.5mm circular needle on 40cm cables, plus a cable knitting needle of approximately the same diameter. DPNs or a longer cable will be needed to work the crown section. Size will fit most teens/adults: measures 28cm wide at brim (to account for extra bulk with folded section) and 21cm high.

Deluxe Pom is a separate (free) pattern but it is pictured here on the beanie. It was designed as a companion to this pattern.

Big Knitting All-Over Cabled Beanie

What Is Being Made

The Big Knitting beanie is a luxurious-looking knitted hat designed by handmade by smine. This intermediate-level project creates the visual impression of a super-chunky yarn garment while using regular DK weight yarn, making it an economical alternative to bulky yarn projects. The beanie features a wide folded brim in a contrasting color that peeks out from beneath the main cable texture, adding depth and visual interest to this cosy winter accessory. The design is completed with an optional removable pompom (available as a separate pattern called Deluxe Pom) that enhances the illusion of super-bulky yarn.

Techniques Used

The Big Knitting beanie employs several key knitting techniques to achieve its distinctive appearance. Cable knitting is the primary decorative technique, with simple rope cables worked all over the hat to create texture and visual bulk. Stockinette stitch forms the base fabric, providing a smooth foundation that showcases the cable work. The construction includes circular knitting using circular needles, which creates a seamless garment. A folded brim in a contrasting color is incorporated, requiring color changes and careful edge management. The optional pompom attachment point is engineered to be easily removable, allowing flexible styling options.

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette stitch – the primary fabric stitch creating a smooth, classic knit texture
  • Rope cables – simple cable stitches worked throughout the design for all-over texture and visual depth
  • Ribbing – likely used at edges and transitions (standard in beanie construction)

Materials Required

The Big Knitting beanie uses 240-260 yards of DK weight (8-ply) yarn. The sample was knitted in White Gum Wool organic merino from Tasmania, Australia, hand-dyed by Nunnaba Artisan Yarn, demonstrating the pattern's suitability for quality merino or similar DK-weight fibers. Needles required include a 3.5mm circular needle on 40cm cables and a 4.5mm circular needle on 40cm cables, allowing for adjustable tension and fit. A cable knitting needle of approximately 3.5-4.5mm diameter is essential for manipulating the rope cables throughout the project. Double-pointed needles (DPNs) or longer circular needles may be used for the crown decreases, depending on knitter preference.
