Product Description

Easy, fun and endlessly customizable, these pillows are built from modular hexagons. Samples are shown worked in worsted weight Noro Kureyon and designed to fit a 16” round pillow form, but they can be modified to work with any gauge or size. Have fun with colour; use bit and bobs in your stash for a boho mix-and-match look, or pair two subtle tones to emphasize texture. I’ve alternated my 2 yarns every 2 rows, but you don’t have to - you don’t even have to do the same thing from hexagon to hexagon!

Bex Pillow Knitting Pattern by Stephanie Earp

What Is Being Made

The Bex Pillow is a customizable knitted cushion cover designed to fit a 16-inch round pillow form. This pattern creates decorative pillows using a modular construction method, allowing crafters to make pillows of various sizes by adjusting yarn weight and yardage accordingly. The design is described as easy, fun, and endlessly customizable, making it suitable for both new and experienced knitters.

Construction Technique

The Bex Pillow is constructed from modular hexagons that are knitted separately and then assembled together. This modular approach allows for flexibility in pillow size and design customization. The pattern includes a formula on page 2 that enables knitters to calculate yardage requirements based on their chosen yarn weight, making it possible to create pillows in multiple dimensions beyond the standard 16-inch round form.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The pattern is worked primarily in garter stitch, which is created by knitting every row. Garter stitch produces a textured, reversible fabric with horizontal ridges and is an ideal choice for beginners due to its simplicity and forgiving nature. The pattern uses written instructions rather than charts, making it accessible to knitters who prefer text-based guidance.

Yarn and Materials

The Bex Pillow pattern accommodates a wide range of yarn weights, including sport, 3-ply, 4-ply, DK, 6-ply, worsted, heavy worsted, aran, and varied weights. The sample pillows shown in the pattern were created using Noro Kureyon, a 100% wool yarn available in various colorways, with each 50-gram skein containing 109 yards (100 meters). For a standard pillow, 400 yards of worsted weight yarn is required. Additional materials include 5mm (US 8) straight needles, a darning needle for finishing, a 16-inch round pillow form or batting, and extra batting for filling the corners of the finished cushion.

Pattern Customization

One of the standout features of the Bex Pillow pattern is its adaptability. Knitters can use any weight yarn to create pillows of different sizes by following the formula provided in the pattern. Since yardage requirements change based on yarn weight selection, the included calculation guide helps crafters determine exactly how much yarn they need for their specific project. This flexibility makes the pattern suitable for using up yarn stash or creating coordinating pillows in various sizes throughout a home.
