Product Description
Bernie is a sweet little puppy; they love walks in the park, chocolate cookies, and lots of hugs! Bernie is worked in stockinette with garter stitch ears, and the pattern incorporates Kitchener stitch grafting. Designed by Amanda Berry @fluffandfuzz, the dog is knitted in acrylic DK yarns on single pointed needles (not in the round). For confident beginners and above, other techniques used include casting on and off, knits, purls, increases and decreases, and seaming to finish.
Bernie the Dog Knitting Pattern
What is Being Made
Bernie the Dog is a knitted toy designed by Amanda Berry. This is a stuffed animal project created using the knitting craft, suitable for crafters with intermediate skill levels. The finished toy is filled with polyester fiberfill to create a soft, cuddly plush animal.
Yarn and Materials
Bernie the Dog is knitted using DK weight yarn (also called double knitting or light worsted weight, 8 ply). The pattern requires less than 50g of yarn in a light neutral shade such as Beige, plus a few grams of Dark Brown for contrast details. The original photographed sample was created using Hayfield Bonus DK, a 100% acrylic yarn, in the shades Wheat and Chocolate. Any similar DK weight yarn is suitable for this project.
Needles and Notions
This knitting pattern requires the following supplies:
- A pair of 3.5mm (US 4) single pointed needles, with a minimum length of 20cm
- A darning or tapestry needle for seaming and finishing
- A 200g bag of toy filling (polyester fiberfill) for stuffing
- Two 6mm black beads for the eyes
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
As an intermediate-level knitting pattern, Bernie the Dog employs standard knitting techniques appropriate for toy construction. The pattern uses single pointed needles to create knitted fabric pieces that are subsequently seamed together. Toy knitting typically incorporates basic stitches and shaping methods to form the three-dimensional body of the animal, with careful attention to even tension and neat finishing for a polished appearance. The use of small needles and DK weight yarn creates a fabric dense enough to prevent toy filling from escaping through gaps.
