Beneath the Bridge Knit Hat by Sierra Morningstar
What Is Being Made
Beneath the Bridge is a downloadable knitting pattern for a versatile hat design offered in two distinct styles. The pattern includes both a slouchy, longer version and a classic beanie with a folded-over brim, allowing knitters to choose their preferred silhouette. This intermediate-level knitting project is designed by Sierra Morningstar and comes in two finished sizes: Small (17.5" / 44 cm circumference) and Large (19.25" / 48 cm circumference). The smaller size offers generous stretch and can accommodate heads up to 22" (56 cm) in circumference, making it adaptable for various head sizes and fit preferences.
Knitting Techniques Used
This hat pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate crafters. The construction uses circular knitting methods, worked in the round using circular needles and double-pointed needles (DPNs) to create a seamless, tubular fabric. The pattern incorporates stitch pattern work that requires attention to detail and familiarity with reading knitting instructions, as the design features textured stitch patterns with notable elasticity built into the fabric structure.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The primary stitch patterns featured in Beneath the Bridge are garter rib and ribbed cable. The garter rib provides a classic, textured foundation, while the bold ribbed cable serves as the focal point of the design. These stitch patterns work together to create visual interest and dimensional texture. The combination of these stitches produces fabric with significant elasticity, which accounts for the hat's generous stretch and comfortable fit across different head sizes.
Materials: Yarn and Needles
This pattern is worked in DK weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that creates a fabric with good drape and structure. The slouchy hat version requires 190 yards (174 meters) for the Small size and 220 yards (201 meters) for the Large size. The sample was knit in Anzula Cricket, a premium yarn blend containing 80% wool.
Knitters will need the following needles to complete this project:
- US size 6 / 4 mm circular needle, 16" (40 cm) length, for working the main fabric
- US size 5 / 3.75 mm circular needle, 16" (40 cm) length, or one size smaller than the gauge needle, for ribbing and finishing
- Double-pointed needles (DPNs) in US size 6 / 4 mm for decreasing and crown shaping
Additional notions include 10 stitch markers, with one distinctly different marker to denote the beginning of each round, which is essential for tracking pattern repeats and maintaining proper stitch placement throughout the circular construction.
Finished Measurements
Slouch Hat: Length measures 10.5" (26.5 cm) for Small and 10.75" (27 cm) for Large, creating the characteristic longer silhouette.
Beanie: Length measures 9" (23 cm) for Small and 9.25" (23.5 cm) for Large when the brim is folded in half, providing a more compact, classic hat profile.
