Bee, Ladybird and Butterfly Ferrero Chocolate Covers

What is Being Made

This downloadable knitting pattern by Andrew Lucas creates three decorative chocolate covers designed to fit Ferrero Rocher-sized chocolates or similar-sized confections. The set includes a ladybird, a bee, and a butterfly, each constructed as a small knitted toy that opens to hold a chocolate treat inside. These beginner-friendly projects are ideal for gift wrapping, party favors, or decorative additions to candy dishes.

Craft and Technique Overview

The pattern uses fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners, making it an excellent introduction to small-scale toy construction. Each chocolate cover is worked flat on needles and then seamed to create a three-dimensional form. The designs incorporate color changes to create distinct visual features for each creature, allowing crafters to practice managing multiple yarn colors within a single project.

Stitches Used

  • Stocking stitch (st st) – The primary stitch throughout, created by alternating knit rows and purl rows to form a smooth, classic knitted fabric
  • Knit stitch (k) – Used for shaping and increasing rows
  • Purl stitch (p) – Alternated with knit to create stocking stitch
  • Increase (inc) – Worked knitwise to expand stitch counts for shaping the cover body
  • Knit two together (k2tog) – Used for decreasing stitches to shape the top of the cover
  • Purl two together (p2tog) – Applied for gradual decreasing
  • Slip stitch (sl) – Referenced in abbreviations for construction techniques
  • Chain stitch – An embroidery stitch used to add surface details, such as the ladybird's center line

Ladybird Construction Details

The ladybird begins with a black wool base, cast on with 12 stitches. The first row increases into every stitch to create 24 stitches, establishing the foundation for the cover's width. Stocking stitch is worked for 4 rows in black, forming the base layer. The wool is then changed to red, and stocking stitch continues for 10 rows to create the distinctive red wing covers. Decreasing begins with a purl row worked two stitches together to the end, reducing to 12 stitches, followed by a knit row worked two stitches together to the end, leaving 6 stitches. The remaining stitches are broken off with a long end, threaded through, and pulled tight to gather and close the top. The row ends at the finishing edge and cast-on edge are seamed together for approximately 1 centimeter, leaving an opening for inserting the chocolate. Chain stitch embroidery in black wool adds a center line detail down the ladybird's body.

Materials Required

  • Needles: 3.25mm knitting needles
  • Yarn: Double knitting weight wool in multiple colors – red, black, yellow, white, lemon, light pink, and pink. Oddments (small leftover amounts) of each color are sufficient for this small project

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as beginner, making it accessible to knitters new to the craft or those seeking a quick, satisfying project. The small scale and straightforward stitch combinations allow beginners to practice fundamental techniques without overwhelming complexity.
