Beaucoup Socks by Atelier des Glenettes
What is Being Made
Beaucoup is a downloadable knitting pattern for socks designed for girls and women. The pattern offers six size options ranging from 2XS through XL, accommodating foot circumferences from 16 cm (8 inches) for the smallest size up to 26 cm (10¼ inches) for the largest size. The smallest sizes (2XS and XS) are specifically designed to fit children's feet, while the remaining sizes serve older children and adult wearers. The pattern covers 21 shoe sizes across both French and US sizing systems, providing comprehensive sizing from FR size 25 through FR size 45 and US sizes 8 through 11.
Techniques Used
The Beaucoup socks employ fundamental sock knitting techniques appropriate for intermediate-level knitters. The pattern utilizes circular needles to create seamless construction, a standard approach in sock knitting that eliminates the need for seaming. The design incorporates colorwork, requiring knitters to work with three distinct yarn colors to create the pattern. Shaping techniques are integrated throughout the pattern, including increases and decreases to form the sock structure from cuff to toe.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch structure is stockinette stitch, which creates the smooth, classic fabric base for these socks. The pattern employs the following abbreviations and techniques:
- k (knit): the fundamental knit stitch
- p (purl): the reverse of the knit stitch
- k2tog (knit 2 together): a right-leaning decrease used for shaping
- kfb (knit into the front and back): an increase that creates an extra stitch
The gauge is worked in stockinette stitch at 32 stitches by 44 rows per 10 cm (4 inches), which is typical for fingering-weight yarn on smaller needles.
Materials and Tools
The Beaucoup socks are knitted using fingering-weight yarn, a 4-ply yarn weight that is the standard choice for sock knitting due to its durability and the refined fabric it produces. The pattern sample shown uses (Vi)laines Chaussettes yarn in three distinct colors:
- Color 1 (Red): approximately 30 to 80 meters (33 to 88 yards) depending on size
- Color 2 (White): approximately 60 to 140 meters (66 to 155 yards) depending on size
- Color 3 (Light Blue): approximately 30 to 70 meters (33 to 77 yards) depending on size
The pattern requires 2.5 mm circular needles (US size 1½) for working the stockinette stitch at the specified gauge. Additional tools include 2 stitch markers to track pattern repeats and construction points throughout the knitting process. The combination of fine needles and fingering-weight yarn creates the dense, elastic fabric necessary for well-fitting, long-lasting socks.
