Bear in Deramores Studio Anti-Pilling DK

What is Being Made

This is an intermediate knitting pattern for a stuffed toy bear standing 15cm tall, designed by Amanda Berry. The finished bear is a soft, cuddly toy created by knitting individual pieces that are then sewn together and stuffed. The pattern includes a matching sweater for the bear, adding an extra decorative element to the finished project. This is a complete toy design suitable for gift-giving or personal collection, though the finished toy is not recommended for children under 3 years due to small parts including buttons and stuffing.

Techniques Used

The bear is constructed using knitting in the round, a fundamental technique for creating seamless, tubular pieces ideal for toy construction. This method eliminates the need for seaming on certain sections and creates a smooth, professional finish. The pattern employs the long tail cast on method for starting all pieces, a reliable casting technique that provides an elastic edge suitable for toy construction. Assembly involves sewing knitted pieces together using a darning needle, combining multiple knitted components into the final three-dimensional bear shape. The pattern also includes embroidery work for creating the bear's nose using black yarn, adding facial definition and character to the finished toy.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch structure is stockinette stitch, which forms the foundation of the bear's body and sweater pieces. Stockinette stitch creates a smooth, classic knit fabric with a neat appearance on the right side, making it ideal for toy construction where a polished finish is desired. The pattern utilizes live stitches held on stitch holders or waste yarn during construction, allowing the knitter to work multiple sections and join them strategically. The use of stitch markers helps track pattern repeats and shaping throughout the in-the-round construction process.

Materials and Tools

The bear requires Deramores Studio Anti-Pilling DK yarn in two colorways: 1 x 100g in Gingerbread (Yarn A) and 1 x 100g in Frost (Yarn B). DK (double knitting) weight yarn is a medium weight suitable for creating detailed toys with good stitch definition. The pattern calls for 3.5mm double-pointed needles (DPNs) with a minimum length of 10cm, or alternatively a circular needle for the magic loop method, both suitable for working in the round. The tension is set at approximately 22 stitches and 28 rows per 10cm square worked in stockinette stitch on 3.5mm needles, ensuring proper sizing of the finished 15cm bear. Additional materials include 50g of toy stuffing for filling the bear, two 9mm domed black buttons for eyes, a stitch marker for tracking rounds, a darning or tapestry needle for assembling and sewing pieces together, and a few metres of black DK acrylic yarn (such as Deramores Studio DK in Ebony) for embroidering the nose detail.
