Product Description
I’ve made many wreaths over the years - this is the base I use. It's beginner friendly featuring simple single crochet stitches, but does require some basic sewing. To make your own wreath cover, you'll need 185 yards (plus a little more for optional hanger) of Worsted Weight Yarn - I used about half a skein of Red Heart’s Super Saver in Aran. Bernat Super Value and Caron One Pound are good alternatives. You'll also need a 12" styrofoam wreath form, and it doesn't matter if it's green or white. For reference, I had my cover ready in just over two hours.
Basic 12" Wreath Form Cover Crochet Pattern
Project Overview
This downloadable crochet pattern from Alexandra EyeLoveKnots provides instructions for creating a decorative cover for a 12-inch foam wreath form. The finished piece measures 6⅛ inches wide by 30.75 inches in length before seaming, making it perfectly sized to wrap around and conceal a standard 12-inch Styrofoam wreath base. This beginner-friendly project is ideal for crafters looking to customize holiday decorations or create personalized wreaths for home décor or gifting.
What You Will Make
A seamless wreath form cover that wraps around a 12-inch foam wreath base, transforming a plain craft supply into a finished decorative piece. The pattern includes an optional hanger component for easy display. The cover is worked in a single continuous piece before being seamed to fit the wreath form.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
This beginner-level pattern uses fundamental crochet techniques suitable for those new to the craft. The primary stitch employed is:
- Single Crochet (SC) - The foundational stitch used throughout the pattern to create a dense, structured fabric that holds its shape well when wrapped around the foam form
The pattern begins with a foundation chain and builds from there using basic single crochet rows. Seaming is required to join the finished piece around the wreath form, and a tapestry needle is used for this finishing work.
Materials Required
Yarn: Approximately 185 yards of worsted weight or aran weight yarn (plus additional yardage for an optional hanger). The designer used Red Heart's Super Saver in Aran, utilizing roughly half a skein. Alternative yarn options that work well include Bernat's Super Value Yarn and Caron's One Pound, both offering similar weight and yardage efficiency.
Tools: An H8/5mm crochet hook and a tapestry needle for seaming and weaving in ends.
Base Form: One 12-inch Styrofoam wreath form (the designer used a white Floracraft brand wreath form available at craft retailers like Joann).
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 20 single crochet stitches by 14 rows equaling 6⅛ inches by 3⅞ inches. The minimum width for this pattern to function properly is 5.75 inches wide. Achieving proper gauge ensures the finished cover will fit the 12-inch foam wreath form correctly.
