Product Description
Banner Unfurled is a 3 colored shawl with beading that I originally made to wear for patriotic holidays. However, I have made it many times over with varying colors. I have made it in pink and grays, shades of blue, and reds and black.
Banner Unfurled Knitted Shawl
Project Overview
Banner Unfurled is a beginner-friendly knitted shawl designed by Katrina Workman Designs. This colorwork shawl features a distinctive striped construction with three coordinating colors arranged in horizontal bands. The finished dimensions are 72 inches by 17 inches (183 cm by 38 cm), making it a versatile accessory suitable for draping or displaying. The design combines structural shaping with decorative elements, creating visual interest through both color blocking and embellishment techniques.
Materials and Gauge
Banner Unfurled is worked in sport weight yarn, with approximately 175 yards (160 meters) required for each of the three colors used in the design. The pattern recommends Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino yarn, though any sport weight yarn in the specified yardage will work. Construction requires US 6 (4 mm) needles for the main knitting, plus a beading crochet hook for bead application. The gauge is 20 stitches and 40 rows per 4-inch (10 cm) square, which is typical for sport weight yarn on this needle size.
Techniques and Construction
The shawl is constructed in distinct sections, each employing different knitting techniques to build the overall design. The pattern begins with a garter stitch foundation section that establishes the base width through strategic increases and decreases. Subsequent sections introduce lace patterns and colorwork transitions, allowing crafters to develop skills progressively. The use of multiple colors requires yarn management through cutting and tying techniques between color changes. Bead embellishment is incorporated using a specialized method that involves slipping beads onto stitches without knitting through them, adding dimensional detail to the finished piece.
Stitches and Abbreviations
Banner Unfurled uses fundamental knitting stitches appropriate for beginner-level crafters:
- kfbf - knit front, back, front (an increase stitch that creates three stitches from one)
- k2tog - knit 2 stitches together (a decrease stitch)
- yo - yarn over (creates an eyelet or lace opening)
- k1 - knit 1 stitch
- WS - wrong side or back side of the fabric
- AB - add bead (a specialized technique using a crochet hook to slip a bead onto an existing stitch)
Color and Embellishment
The shawl features three distinct color sections: Color #1 (Red), Color #2 (White), and Color #3 (Blue). The color arrangement creates bold horizontal stripes that give the design its "banner" aesthetic. Beyond the yarn colors, the pattern incorporates 40 beads measuring 6 mm that are strategically placed throughout the design. These beads are applied using the specialized add bead technique, which involves threading them onto individual stitches rather than knitting through them, creating a decorative embellished effect.
Skill Level
Classified as a beginner project, Banner Unfurled introduces knitters to essential techniques including increases, decreases, lace elements, colorwork transitions, and bead embellishment. The progression from garter stitch foundation through lace sections allows new knitters to build confidence while creating a polished, professional-looking finished piece. The straightforward stitch vocabulary and clear section-by-section construction make this an ideal project for those developing foundational knitting skills.
