Balvenie Hat by BabyCocktails

What Is Being Made

Balvenie is a knitted hat design created by designer Thea Colman of BabyCocktails. This is a downloadable PDF knitting pattern available in two yarn weight options: sport weight and worsted weight. The hat features a fitted crown with a cable motif detail and comes in multiple sizes to accommodate different head circumferences.

Yarn and Materials

The Balvenie pattern is designed to work with two different yarn weights, allowing knitters to choose based on their preferred fiber and finished hat characteristics:

  • Sport Weight Option: Harrisville Designs FlyWHEEL yarn, which is 100% pure virgin wool. Each 50g skein contains 170 yards (155 meters). The pattern requires approximately 225 to 250 yards (205 to 228 meters) of yarn depending on size.
  • Worsted Weight Option: Harrisville Designs WATERshed yarn, also 100% pure virgin wool. Each 50g skein contains 110 yards (100 meters). The pattern requires approximately 200 to 225 yards (182 to 205 meters) of yarn depending on size.

Needles and Notions

The pattern requires circular needles and double-pointed needles (DPNs) in matching sizes. For sport weight yarn, use US #4 (3.5mm) needles, and for worsted weight yarn, use US #6 (4mm) needles. Knitters should have 16-inch (40.5cm) circular needles available for the body of the hat and DPNs for working the crown decreases. Additional notions include a darning needle for weaving in ends and optionally a cable needle for managing the cable stitches, though cables can be worked without one.

Sizing and Finished Dimensions

The Balvenie hat is offered in two sizes:

  • Sport Weight: Size 1 measures 19 inches (48.25cm) circumference around the head with a depth of 11.25 inches (28.5cm) from the cast-on edge to crown when laid flat. Size 2 measures 22 inches (55.75cm) circumference with the same 11.25-inch (28.5cm) depth.
  • Worsted Weight: Size 1 measures 17 inches (43.25cm) circumference with a depth of 10 inches (25.5cm). Size 2 measures 21.25 inches (54cm) circumference with a depth of 11 inches (28cm).

Gauge and Stitch Specifications

Achieving the correct gauge is essential for proper fit. Gauge requirements differ between yarn weights:

  • Sport Weight Gauge: 29 stitches and 32 rounds per 4 inches (10cm) when working ribbing.
  • Worsted Weight Gauge: 21 stitches and 28 rounds per 4 inches (10cm) when working ribbing.

The cable motif is a repeating 23-stitch, 6-round pattern. Each complete repeat of this cable motif measures 3.16 inches (8cm) wide and 0.75 inches (2cm) deep, allowing knitters to plan their stitch counts and understand how the cable detail will appear on the finished hat.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

The Balvenie is classified as a beginner-level knitting project, making it accessible to newer knitters while still incorporating interesting stitch work. The hat is worked in the round using circular needles and double-pointed needles, a standard technique for seamless hat construction. The pattern features ribbing, which creates vertical stretch and helps the hat maintain its shape and fit around the head. The primary design element is a cable motif, a classic knitting technique that creates raised, twisted stitches for visual texture and interest. The cable repeat can be worked with or without a cable needle, depending on the knitter's preference and skill level, making the pattern flexible for different experience levels.

Pattern Format

The Balvenie is provided as a downloadable PDF pattern, allowing knitters to access the instructions immediately and print them for reference while working. This format is convenient for both digital and paper-based knitting workflows.
