Baby's First Peter Rabbit Doll by Andrew Lucas

What is Being Made

This is a knitted stuffed toy doll designed as a baby-friendly interpretation of Peter Rabbit, standing approximately 27 centimeters tall. The doll is constructed as a complete figure with distinct body parts including legs, body, head, and additional features, making it an engaging first toy for infants and young children.

Craft and Primary Technique

The project uses knitting as the primary construction method. This is a beginner-level pattern, making it accessible to knitters who are new to toy making or three-dimensional knitted projects. The doll is created by knitting individual components that are later assembled together, a common approach in amigurumi-style toy construction.

Stitches and Knitting Techniques Used

  • Stocking stitch (st st) – The primary stitch throughout most of the pattern, created by alternating knit rows and purl rows to produce a smooth, flat fabric with a distinctive V-pattern appearance on the right side
  • Garter stitch (gs) – A textured stitch created by knitting every row, used selectively in the design
  • Increases (inc) – Used to expand stitch counts, particularly at the beginning of leg sections to shape the doll's form
  • Decreases (dec) – Applied to reduce stitch counts and create shaping throughout the garment
  • Bind and tie (B and T) – A finishing technique where yarn ends are threaded through a tapestry needle and passed through the stitches on the knitting needle, then drawn up and tied off to secure the work

Construction Method

The doll is constructed in separate pieces that are knitted individually and then assembled. The pattern demonstrates a modular approach: legs are cast on with a small stitch count, increased in the first row to create width, then worked in stocking stitch for length. These leg pieces are held on stitch holders while the main body is constructed by knitting across both leg sections simultaneously, creating a unified torso. This technique allows for seamless integration of the legs into the body.

Materials and Yarn

The project requires 3.25mm knitting needles and double knitting weight wool in multiple colors to create the character details. Specifically, the pattern calls for oddments (small leftover amounts) of double knitting wool in brown (used for the legs and initial body sections), blue (introduced for body color changes), beige, yellow, and black (for facial features and additional details). A small amount of polyester stuffing is required to fill the completed knitted pieces, giving the doll its three-dimensional shape and soft, cuddly texture appropriate for a baby toy.
