Baby Sweater Dot in Hoooked Somen – Knitted Baby Jumper Pattern (Downloadable PDF)
The Baby Sweater Dot is a charming knitted baby sweater pattern by Hoooked, worked in their Somen yarn. This beginner-friendly pattern produces a classic pullover-style infant jumper featuring a subtle all-over dot stitch pattern worked directly into the fabric. The design is available as a downloadable PDF and is sized to fit babies from 62 cm through to 86 cm, making it a versatile project for newborns and infants up to approximately 18 months. The finished sweater features a neat ribbed border, a simple neckline shaping, and a button placket for easy dressing.
Garment Overview
The Baby Sweater Dot is constructed in separate flat pieces — a back panel (rugpand), a front panel (voorpand), and two sleeves (mouwen) — which are then seamed together during finishing. The front panel includes a button band worked with a crochet hook, featuring two small buttonholes, giving the garment a practical and polished finish. The dot stitch pattern is introduced from the very first row of the main body sections, creating a delicate textured fabric throughout.
Techniques Used
- Flat knitting – all main pieces are worked flat on straight needles
- Ribbing (boordsteek) – used for the cuffs, hem, and neckline borders to create a neat, stretchy edge
- Stockinette stitch (tricotsteek) – forms the base fabric of the body and sleeves
- Dot stitch pattern (stippenpatroon) – a four-stitch repeat textured pattern worked into the stockinette fabric, creating the signature spotted surface detail
- Neckline shaping – achieved by casting off centre stitches and working each shoulder section separately, with further decreases at the neck edge
- Sleeve shaping – stitches are increased evenly on both sides every fourth row to shape the sleeve from cuff to underarm
- Buttonhole construction – worked as a yarn-over followed by knitting two stitches together within the button band
- Crochet button band – a small crochet hook is used to work the button placket on the front right side
- Seaming and finishing – pieces are joined using a tapestry needle (stopnaald)
The Dot Stitch Pattern Explained
The stippenpatroon (dot stitch pattern) is worked over a stitch count divisible by 4, plus 2 edge stitches. It creates a repeating raised dot effect by alternating knit and purl stitches in a specific sequence across eight rows. The pattern rows are as follows:
- Row 1: 1 edge stitch, *3 knit, 1 purl*, 1 edge stitch
- Rows 2, 4, 6, 8 (all even rows): purl all stitches
- Rows 3 and 7: knit all stitches
- Row 5: 1 edge stitch, *1 purl, 3 knit*, 1 edge stitch
This eight-row repeat offsets the purl dot by two stitches on Row 5, creating the characteristic scattered dot appearance across the fabric. The pattern is maintained consistently throughout the body and sleeves, including during sleeve increases.
Stitches Used
- Knit stitch (rechts / r)
- Purl stitch (averechts / av)
- Ribbing (boordsteek) – for borders and cuffs
- Stockinette stitch (tricotsteek) – as the main fabric base
- Dot stitch pattern (stippenpatroon) – the signature textured repeat
- Yarn-over increase (omslag) – used for buttonhole construction
