Product Description
Pretty lace for active little girls! Knit from the bottom up, this sweater has a lace yoke with nupps. Choose between a round neck and a smaller neck with buttons on the shoulder. The instructions are both written out and charted, except for the variation to have buttons on the shoulder which is only charted. You will need to know how to knit, purl, work in the round, graft, and knit lace. Nupps can be left out if you don’t want to do them, or can be replaced with beads. The sample was knit in The Uncommon Thread Merino Fingering. A substitute yarn is shown below.

What Is Being Made
The Baby Crown Tee is a downloadable knitting pattern for a children's short-sleeved top featuring a decorative crown motif. This advanced-level design is available in seven sizes ranging from 12 months through 10 years, with corresponding chest measurements from 18 to 28 inches. The pattern was originally published in 2013 and is shown in size 4 in the sample image.
Craft and Primary Technique
This is a knitting project worked primarily in the round using circular needles. The construction method employs top-down knitting, which allows for easy fitting adjustments and seamless construction. The pattern utilizes both longer circular needles for the body and either magic loop method or double-pointed needles (dpns) for the sleeve sections, providing flexibility in tool choice based on knitter preference.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques
The garment is worked predominantly in stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric surface. The crown design element is integrated into the stitch pattern, though specific stitch abbreviations for this decorative feature are detailed within the full pattern instructions. The pattern includes grafting techniques to join sections seamlessly, requiring proficiency with yarn needle grafting methods.
Yarn and Materials
This pattern calls for The Uncommon Thread Merino Fingering, a 100% superwash merino wool yarn with yardage of 400 yards per 100 grams. The sample shown is knit in the colorway Confetti. Yardage requirements vary by size: 300 yards for the 12-month size, increasing to 750 yards for the largest 10-year size. Knitters typically need between 1 to 2 skeins depending on the size being made.
Needles, Notions, and Gauge
The pattern requires 3.75 mm/US 5 circular needles in multiple lengths: an 18 to 36-inch circular needle for the body (length depends on the size being knit) and additional circulars sized appropriately for sleeve work using either magic loop or dpn techniques. Additional notions include a yarn needle for weaving in ends and grafting seams. An optional buttoned shoulder variation requires three buttons approximately 0.5 inches across.
The working gauge is 6 stitches and 9 rows per 1 inch when worked in stockinette stitch, blocked and then gently stretched. Knitters should note that this yarn exhibits significant elasticity: initial swatches may measure 6.5 stitches per inch, relaxing to 5.25 stitches per inch when wet, and springing back to 6 stitches per inch when dry and stretched, demonstrating the lively nature of merino fingering weight yarn.
