Autumn Leaf Table Runner by Karin Burkart
Project Overview
The Autumn Leaf Table Runner is a beginner-friendly crochet design created by independent designer Karin Burkart. This downloadable PDF pattern features an autumn-themed table runner worked entirely in filet stitch, a classic openwork crochet technique that creates a delicate, lacy appearance perfect for seasonal home décor. The pattern is ideal for crafters new to filet work, as it combines straightforward stitch construction with visual interest through its leaf motif design.
What is Being Made
This project produces a decorative table runner with autumn leaf imagery, measuring approximately 20 cm wide by 100 cm long. The design is fully customizable in length, allowing makers to adjust the dimensions according to their table size and personal preferences. The filet stitch construction creates an open, airy fabric with a sophisticated appearance suitable for fall table settings and seasonal decoration.
Techniques and Stitches Used
Primary Technique: Filet crochet is the foundation of this pattern. Filet stitch creates a mesh-like fabric by alternating solid blocks and open spaces, allowing the crocheter to work from a graph to create pictorial designs.
- Double Crochet (DC): The main stitch used to form solid blocks in the filet pattern. Each block consists of 4 double crochets.
- Chain Stitch (CH): Used to create the open spaces between blocks. Spaces are formed with 1 double crochet followed by 2 chain stitches.
- Half Double Crochet (HDC): Included in the stitch abbreviations for pattern flexibility.
- Slip Stitch (SL ST): Used to join rounds or finish sections as needed.
- Turning Chain (TCH): Essential for turning at the end of each row to maintain proper stitch height and pattern alignment.
The pattern provides two working methods: crafters can follow a detailed graph showing blocks as X symbols and empty squares as spaces, or they can work row-by-row using written explanations. This dual approach accommodates different learning styles and preferences. An important filet technique note: when multiple blocks appear consecutively, the final double crochet of one block serves as the first double crochet of the next block, creating efficient stitch counts (2 blocks = 7 DC, 3 blocks = 10 DC, 4 blocks = 13 DC, and so on). Each row begins with a block formed by 3 chain stitches and 3 double crochets.
Materials and Tools
- Yarn: Cotton DK weight yarn, approximately 100 grams (additional yardage required if making a larger version)
- Hook: 3 mm crochet hook
- Gauge: 10 x 10 cm measures 8 rows by 20 double crochets, essential for achieving the correct finished dimensions
The pattern is written using US crochet terminology, making it accessible to crocheters familiar with American stitch abbreviations and conventions. Cotton yarn is an excellent choice for a table runner, offering durability, easy care, and a crisp drape that showcases the delicate filet stitch pattern beautifully.
