Auden Cardigan in Berroco Remix — Knitting Pattern Summary

The Auden cardigan, designed by Margaux Hufnagel and published by Berroco, is an elegant open-front cardigan worked in a combination of stockinette and lace. This intermediate-level knitting pattern is available as a downloadable PDF and is sized to fit a wide range of bodies, making it a versatile addition to any handknitter's wardrobe.

What Is Being Made

Auden is a classic open-front cardigan featuring a graceful Fountain Lace Pattern worked throughout the body and sleeves. The finished garment includes a 5" / 12.5 cm opening at the center front, giving it a relaxed, draped silhouette. It is offered in ten sizes with finished bust measurements ranging from 37" to 72" / 94 to 183 cm, with a recommended positive ease of approximately 2–5" / 5–12.5 cm. Finished lengths range from 25½" to 28" / 65 to 71 cm depending on size. The sample shown in the pattern is knitted in size 41" / 104 cm.

Construction Technique

Auden is worked using a seamless, one-piece construction method that knitters of intermediate skill will appreciate for its efficiency and clean finish. Key construction details include:

  • Worked in one piece from the bottom hem up to the underarms, then divided for the back and two fronts separately
  • Sleeves are cast on and then worked together with the back and fronts after the division, integrating the sleeve shaping into the yoke construction
  • Stitches for held sections are placed on waste yarn during the division, a common and tidy technique in seamless garment knitting
  • Both 16" / 40 cm and 32" / 80 cm circular needles are used at different stages to accommodate the changing stitch counts throughout construction

Stitches and Stitch Patterns Used

The pattern combines two primary stitch textures to create visual interest and drape:

  • Stockinette stitch (St st) — the foundational knit/purl fabric used throughout the garment
  • Fountain Lace Pattern (Chart 1) — a 16-stitch repeat plus 1 lace pattern worked over right-side and wrong-side rows. Right-side rows incorporate a combination of yarn overs, decreases, and central double decreases to create the characteristic fountain or fan-like lace motif. Wrong-side rows are purled throughout, keeping the lace construction manageable for intermediate knitters.

Specific lace techniques used within the Fountain Lace Pattern include:

  • SSK (slip, slip, knit) — a left-leaning decrease
  • K2tog (knit two together) — a right-leaning decrease
  • Yo (yarn over) — creates the decorative eyelets characteristic of lace knitting
  • Sl 1, k2tog, psso — a central double decrease that draws two stitches symmetrically toward a center stitch, forming the pointed peaks of the Fountain Lace motif

The gauge is measured across both stockinette and the Lace Pattern after blocking, which is an important step with lace knitting as blocking opens up the yarn overs and fully reveals the lace structure.

Materials — Yarn, Needles, and Notions

The pattern calls for Berroco Remix, an aran weight yarn sold in 100-gram balls. The colorway shown is #3903 Almond. Depending on size, the pattern requires between 4 and 9 balls of Berroco Remix. The gauge is 17 stitches and 23 rows = 4" / 10 cm in stockinette and Lace Pattern after blocking.
