Assawoman Bay Shawlette by Corrine Walcher

What is Being Made

Assawoman Bay is a sideways shawlette inspired by the body of water beside Ocean City, Maryland. Named after its geographic location, this design celebrates the Ocean City Boardwalk through its exclusive Boardwalk Lights colorway. The finished shawlette measures 17 inches by 60 inches once blocked, making it a versatile accessory piece suitable for layering or draping.

Design and Construction Technique

This shawlette employs a sideways construction method, meaning it is knit from one end to the other rather than from the top down or bottom up. The pattern uses an innovative yarn-weight-based approach to maximize yardage usage: knitters weigh their yarn at the start and increase stitches until reaching the halfway point, then decrease for the second half. This technique allows the design to accommodate most of a standard skein without significant leftover yarn, making it an efficient and practical project for stash-busting.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The shawlette is worked primarily in stockinette stitch, a fundamental knitting pattern that creates a smooth, classic fabric with characteristic V-shaped columns. The gauge for this pattern is 18 stitches and 28 rows per 4 inches in wet-blocked stockinette. While gauge is noted as not critical for this item, achieving proper gauge will affect the drape and the total amount of yarn consumed during knitting.
