Product Description
ASSAM is an easygoing yet polished cardigan that’s perfect for hand-dyed or striping yarns. The side-to-side construction ensures that you’ll end up with flattering vertical lines. An easy fit and faux raglan shaping makes this the perfect throw-on- and-go sweater, but it’s polished enough for work, too. Wide seed stitch bands and three-quarter sleeves top off this classic cardigan.
Assam is knit flat in one piece from cuff to cuff, beginning at the left sleeve and proceeding up to the left shoulder, across the left front, back, right front, and then right sleeve down to the cuff. This cardigan doesn’t have buttons, but they can easily be added if desired.
Relaxed fit and meant to be worn with several inches of ease (2-4” / 5-10cm). Choose the size which is closest to your bust measurement or one size up.
The sample was knit in Tanis Fiber Arts Green Label Aran Weight. A substitute yarn is shown below.
Assam Cardigan by Laura Chau
What is Being Made
Assam is a relaxed-fit cardigan designed by Laura Chau for hand-dyed or striped yarns. This easygoing yet polished sweater features three-quarter sleeves and is suitable for both casual everyday wear and professional settings. The cardigan is designed to be worn with 2-4 inches (5-10 centimeters) of ease for a comfortable, throw-on-and-go aesthetic while maintaining a refined appearance.
Construction Method
Assam is knit flat in one continuous piece from cuff to cuff using a side-to-side construction technique. The knitting begins at the left sleeve cuff and proceeds upward to the left shoulder, continues across the left front and back panels, then moves across the right front before finishing down the right sleeve to the cuff. This side-to-side approach creates flattering vertical lines throughout the finished garment, making it particularly effective for showcasing hand-dyed or striped yarn patterns.
Shaping and Design Features
The cardigan incorporates faux raglan shaping for a classic silhouette that provides comfortable movement and a polished fit. Wide seed stitch bands frame the design, adding texture and visual interest to the piece. The three-quarter sleeve length offers a versatile style option suitable for multiple seasons and occasions. While the pattern does not include buttons, the design allows for easy button addition if desired by the knitter.
Stitches Used
- Seed stitch – used for the wide bands that frame the cardigan
- Stockinette stitch – implied as the primary stitch for the body panels
Yarn and Materials
Assam is designed for aran or worsted weight yarns, making it suitable for a range of yarn types and colors. The pattern is particularly well-suited for hand-dyed yarns or yarns with striping, as the side-to-side construction naturally showcases color variations and pattern repeats. Standard knitting needles appropriate for the chosen yarn weight are required to complete this project.
Difficulty Level
Assam is rated as an intermediate knitting project, making it accessible to knitters with some experience while offering enough structural interest to remain engaging for more advanced crafters.
