Ash Slipover in Rowan Alpaca Classic – Pattern Summary

The Ash Slipover is a classic knitted slipover designed by Quail Studio and worked in Rowan Alpaca Classic DK weight yarn. This sleeveless pullover features a striking Fair Isle colourwork body and a neat V-neckband, making it a timeless wardrobe staple that sits at an intermediate skill level. The pattern is available as a downloadable PDF and covers nine sizes, fitting bust measurements from 71–76 cm (28–30 in) up to 152–157 cm (60–62 in), with actual garment bust measurements ranging from 99 cm to 179 cm.

What Is Being Made

The Ash Slipover is a sleeveless knitted vest worked in two colours of Rowan Alpaca Classic. It is a fitted-to-relaxed garment with a V-neckline, ribbed neckband, and ribbed armhole borders. The slipover is constructed in separate back and front pieces that are seamed together, making it an ideal project for knitters who are comfortable with colourwork and basic garment shaping.

Yarn and Materials

  • Yarn: Rowan Alpaca Classic (25 g balls), used doubled throughout
  • Colour A: Noir 103 – 10 to 12 balls depending on size
  • Colour B: Snowflake White 115 – 8 to 10 balls depending on size
  • Needles: 1 pair of 5 mm (UK no. 6 / US 8) needles

A key detail of this pattern is that the Rowan Alpaca Classic yarn is held double throughout the entire project. This doubles the weight and warmth of the fabric while creating a beautifully soft, slightly hazy texture that is characteristic of alpaca-blend yarns. Holding yarn double is a straightforward technique that simply requires working with two strands at the same time as though they were one.

Tension

The stated tension is 21 stitches and 20 rows to 10 cm, measured over Fair Isle stocking stitch worked flat using 5 mm needles and yarn held double. Achieving correct tension is especially important in colourwork garments, as Fair Isle knitting can pull in the fabric if floats are carried too tightly.

Techniques Used

  • Fair Isle colourwork – The main body fabric is worked in Fair Isle stocking stitch using both Colour A and Colour B. Fair Isle is a traditional stranded colourwork technique in which two colours are used per row, with the unused colour carried loosely across the back of the work as a float.
  • Flat knitting – The back and front are worked flat (back and forth in rows) on a single pair of needles.
  • Armhole and neck shaping – Standard decreases are used to shape the armholes and the V-neck, including K2tog (knit two together) and slip 2, K1, pass 2 slipped stitches over (p2sso) for the central V-neck decrease.
  • Picking up and knitting stitches – Stitches are picked up around the neckline with right side facing to work the neckband, and similarly around the armhole openings for the armhole borders.
  • Seaming – The right shoulder is joined using back stitch or mattress stitch, and the left shoulder and neckband seam are joined after the neckband is complete.
  • Pressing and finishing – The pattern instructs knitters to press the finished pieces as described on the information page, which is standard practice for smooth, professional finishing of knitted garments.

Stitches Used

  • 1×1 Rib – Used for the cast-on rows of the back, the neckband, and the armhole borders. Worked as K1, P1
