What is Being Made

Arni is a seamless pair of house socks designed by independent knitwear designer Olga Beckmann. These cozy socks are worked in the round from cuff to toe in a single piece, creating a comfortable everyday sock with a classic silhouette. The pattern offers five finished length options ranging from XS (23 cm / 9 inches) to XL (28 cm / 11 inches), making them suitable for various foot sizes.

Knitting Techniques

This beginner-friendly knitting project uses fundamental sock construction techniques. The socks are worked in the round using the top-down method, beginning at the cuff and progressing toward the toe. The seamless construction eliminates the need for seaming, resulting in a smooth, comfortable fit ideal for house socks. The pattern employs the Kitchener stitch for grafting the final stitches at the toe, creating an invisible seam that provides a smooth finish where the toe closes.

The cuff can be customized with optional stripes using contrast colors of the same yarn quality, allowing for personalization while maintaining consistent fiber properties throughout the sock.

Materials and Tools

Yarn: Alafoss Lopi bulky weight yarn in 100% wool. The pattern requires 2 skeins of 109 yards (100 meters) per 100 grams (3.53 ounces each). Optional contrast colors of the same yarn quality may be used for decorative cuff stripes.

Needles and Notions: US 9 (5.5 mm) double-pointed needles (DPNs) set of 5. Needle size may be adjusted as needed to obtain the correct gauge. Additional notions include a row counter for tracking progress, stitch markers for marking pattern sections, and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends.

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern is worked at a gauge of 13 stitches and 22 rounds over 4 inches (10 cm) in Stockinette stitch using the specified yarn and needle size. Adjusting needle size will help achieve the correct gauge, which is essential for proper sock fit across all five size options.
