Product Description
This pattern was hatched from my love of Jane Austen and the very-small gauged. With a light and airy feel, this 'spencer' is highly wearable. Knitters: be forewarned. The little scalloped edging is crocheted!
Note: Silly me, I forgot to add my yarn requirements to the pdf! I apologize for that. I used this yarn, and it was about 2.5 balls of it (which is about 500 metres). That sounds like an awful lot, but it's a very fine gauged yarn.

Anne Elliot Spencer Cardigan by Teresa Gregorio
What is Being Made
The Anne Elliot Spencer is an intermediate-level knitted cardigan designed by Teresa Gregorio and sized for a 36-inch bust. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a classic cardigan silhouette featuring decorative lace detailing and button closure. The design combines textured and lace elements for visual interest and sophistication.
Knitting Techniques Used
This cardigan employs several key knitting techniques suitable for intermediate crafters. The pattern incorporates ribbed edging for structure and stretch at openings and hems. Lace knitting is featured prominently, requiring careful attention to yarn overs and decreases to create the delicate pattern. The pattern also includes blocking techniques to enhance the appearance of the lace elements, with specific guidance to avoid rust-prone pins during the finishing process.
Additionally, the pattern incorporates crochet finishing, as noted in the pattern instructions, which adds a professional edge to the garment. This mixed-technique approach combines knitting and crochet elements for a refined final product.
Stitches Used
- 1x1 Ribbing: Used for edges and cuffs to create elasticity and a neat finish
- Double Seed Stitch: A textured stitch worked over 4 rows using alternating knit and purl combinations (K2, P2 alternating with P2, K2) to create a bumpy, reversible fabric
- Clover Lace: An 11-row repeat lace pattern featuring yarn overs (yo), single decreases (ssk), and centered double decreases (sl1, k2tog, psso) to create an openwork design with a clover-like appearance
- Stockinette Stitch: Implied in sections between textured areas for smooth fabric
Materials and Specifications
The Anne Elliot Spencer calls for sport weight yarn in the 4-ply category. The pattern specifically recommends Wendy Peter Pan 4 ply yarn. Knitting needles should be 2.5 mm in size to achieve the required gauge of 7 stitches per inch. For crochet finishing, a 3 mm crochet hook is needed.
Additional materials include seven 1 cm buttons for the cardigan closure and a tapestry needle for seaming and weaving in ends. The pattern recommends using non-rust blocking pins if blocking the finished cardigan to enhance the lace definition.
Pattern Details
The back piece begins with casting on 82 stitches and working 1x1 ribbing as the foundation. The combination of Double Seed Stitch and Clover Lace creates a balanced design with both textured and openwork sections. The intermediate difficulty level reflects the need to manage multiple stitch techniques and lace pattern repeats while maintaining consistent gauge and shaping.
