Product Description

A pretty lace and cabled cowl, worked in the round from the bottom up. The lace design itself was used in our Annabella Dress, which featured in Knit Now Magazine, hence the name.

It's easily memorized for those used to knitting lace and simple enough for the adventurous beginner who can work from either charts or written instructions.

Ideal to use up leftovers of luxury yarns to match to a favourite sweater, or choose a colour to contrast with your Winter coat. The merino silk was used for the sample and is super soft, the yarn contains a small amount of cashmere and you can feel the difference.

The York Merino knits to a similar tension, but would give a drapier version of the cowl as it is slightly finer being closer to a dk yarn.

Annabella Cowl by Loraine Birchall

What is Being Made

The Annabella Cowl is a lace cowl designed by Loraine Birchall, available as a downloadable PDF pattern (WMDHC002) from Woolly Madly Deeply. This is a versatile neckwear piece that measures approximately 26 inches in circumference by 8 inches in depth, with adjustable sizing options to suit individual preferences. The cowl can be worn as designed or customized with a brooch for added styling versatility.

Techniques and Construction

This cowl is worked in the round from the bottom up, making it a relatively quick knitting project that can be completed in just a couple of evenings. The construction method offers flexibility: knitters can work the entire piece on larger needles for a relaxed, drapey fit, or follow alternate instructions to switch to smaller needles partway through for a neater, more fitted neckline effect. All rows are worked on the right side when knitting in the round, which simplifies the visual aspect of the pattern.

The lace pattern repeats on every row, making it easily memorized and straightforward to follow despite its decorative appearance. While the pattern accommodates the use of a cable needle, it is not required for successful completion of this design.

Stitches Used

The Annabella Cowl features a lace stitch pattern worked throughout. The lace motif appears on every row of the pattern, creating an elegant, open-work design that contributes to the cowl's soft drape and visual appeal.

Materials and Yarn Weight

The pattern calls for 2 x 50g skeins of yarn and accommodates both DK and worsted weight yarns. The sample shown was knitted using Austermann Merino Silk, which provides a soft, drapey quality ideal for lace work. The pattern recommends yarns with merino and silk content for optimal drape and softness, though premium acrylic alternatives will also produce satisfactory results.

Suggested yarn alternatives include Lanas Stop York Merino (a DK weight offering softer drape) and Vanna's Choice. The choice of yarn weight and fiber content will influence the final appearance and feel of the finished cowl.

Difficulty Level

The Annabella Cowl is rated as an intermediate knitting project, making it suitable for knitters with some experience who are comfortable working lace patterns and knitting in the round. The easily memorized stitch pattern and straightforward construction make it an accessible intermediate project despite its decorative lace details.

Needles

The pattern requires knitting needles appropriate for working in the round. Larger needles are used for the main body of the cowl, with the option to change to smaller needles for the neckline if a more fitted effect is desired.
