Anna Perenna is an old Roman goddess of the seasons (or "ring" of the year, as the name "per annum" indicates). Her festival fell on the Ides of March (March 15), which would have marked the first full moon in the year in the old lunar Roman calendar when March was reckoned as the first month of the year.
A thoroughly modern shape and yet, one can imagine it wrapped around the shoulders of Audrey Hepburn as she walks the streets of Rome or drinks coffee in a café in Paris.
This pattern works best with in solid, semi-solid or tonal colour, preferably in a wool or wool blend yarn.

What is Being Made
The Anna Perenna Shawlette is a shallow crescent-shaped shawlette designed to be worn as a lightweight layering piece. Named after the ancient Roman goddess of the seasons, this design celebrates the transition into spring with its crescent silhouette and seasonal inspiration. The shawlette is shallow in depth, making it an ideal accessory for adding warmth without bulk during transitional weather.
Design and Construction Techniques
This shawlette is worked from the bottom up using a distinctive construction method. The crescent shaping is achieved through the strategic use of short rows worked in garter stitch, a technique that creates the curved silhouette characteristic of this design. The upper edge is finished with an i-cord bindoff, which provides a refined, durable edge that complements the overall aesthetic of the piece.
The pattern accommodates multiple yarn weights and sizing options, offering instructions for five different yarn weights and two sizes available for the heavier weight yarns. This flexibility allows knitters to customize the finished dimensions and drape of their shawlette based on their yarn choice and desired fit.
Stitches and Techniques
- Garter stitch as the primary stitch structure
- Short rows for shaping the crescent silhouette
- Increasing techniques for garment construction
- I-cord bindoff for the finished upper edge
