Anka Pullover in Berroco Aerial

What is Being Made

The Anka Pullover is an intermediate-level knitted garment designed by Alison Green. This pullover is available in nine size options, ranging from (35½, 39½, 43½) inches bust measurement in the first size range, through [48, 52, 56, 60] inches in the second range, to {64, 67½, 71½} inches in the largest sizes. The finished length varies from approximately 18½ inches in the smallest size to 22½ inches in the largest, allowing for versatile fit options. The pullover is shown in the 43½-inch size and is designed with approximately 2–4 inches of positive ease for comfortable wearing.

Knitting Techniques Used

This pullover employs several key knitting techniques to achieve its finished design. The garment is worked in the round using circular needles, which allows for seamless construction and even fabric development. Double-pointed needles or preferred small circumference needles are used for working the smaller sections of the garment. The yarn is held double throughout the entire project, which affects both the gauge and the visual appearance of the finished piece. Stitch markers, including one distinctive marker for the beginning of round, help track pattern repeats and construction progress.

Stitches Used

The Anka Pullover features two primary stitch patterns. The main body of the garment is worked in Pattern Stitch, which creates a lace or textured effect characteristic of intermediate-level designs. Stockinette Stitch is also used, likely for ribbed edgings or transitional sections. The Pattern Stitch requires careful attention to stitch counts, with 2 pattern repeats equaling 24 stitches across the width. The combination of these stitches creates visual interest while maintaining structural integrity in the finished garment.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

Yarn: The Anka Pullover is designed to be worked in Berroco Aerial, a lace-weight yarn. The yardage required varies by size: (5, 5, 5) balls for the smallest sizes, [6, 6, 7, 7] balls for the mid-range sizes, and {8, 8, 9} balls for the largest sizes. Each ball weighs 25 grams. The yarn color shown is #3433 Copper. Since the yarn is held double throughout the project, knitters will need to manage two strands simultaneously, effectively creating a sport or DK-weight fabric from the lace-weight yarn.

Needles and Notions: A 32-inch circular needle in size 6 / 4 mm is required for the main body of the pullover. Additionally, one set of double-pointed needles or preferred needles for small circumferences in the same size 6 / 4 mm is needed for working areas with smaller circumferences. Five stitch markers are required, with one being a different color to mark the beginning of round. A tapestry needle for weaving in ends and waste yarn for holding stitches during construction complete the notions list.

Gauge Information

Achieving the correct gauge is essential for proper fit of the Anka Pullover. When working the Pattern Stitch with yarn held double, 2 pattern repeats (24 stitches) should measure 5½ inches across, and 31 rows should measure 4 inches in height. For Stockinette Stitch sections worked with yarn held double, the gauge is 20 stitches and 31 rounds per 4 inches. Knitters should swatch before beginning the project to ensure their gauge matches these specifications, as variations will affect the finished measurements of the garment.
