Product Description
This is the perfect project for everyone who has a bin full of left-over sock yarn. Dive into your stash and knit up this fun, bottom-up shawl with build-in fringe! It is worked in garter stitch, so there are only knit stitches (and some increases) and no purling. Also, there is only one row to remember, so there is no “right” or “wrong” side. Not a single end is woven in because the yarn ends make the fringe! As most of my shawl designs, this one can be worked to any size using any gauge, so it is also possible to work it with a different weight of yarn.

Anja Shawl by Stefanie Bold
What is Being Made
Anja is a bottom-up triangular shawl designed by Stefanie Bold as an ideal stash-busting project for knitters with leftover sock yarn. This free knitting pattern transforms small yarn scraps and partial balls into a finished shawl with integrated fringe, making it an excellent way to use up yarn remnants that might otherwise remain unused in a stash.
Shawl Specifications
The shawl pictured in the pattern uses approximately 270 grams of 4-ply sock yarn and measures 150 centimeters (59 inches) in wingspan with a length of 70 centimeters (27.5 inches). However, the pattern is designed with flexibility in mind, allowing knitters to work the shawl to any desired size by adjusting yardage and using any gauge.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
Anja is worked in the round from the bottom up using a circular needle, eliminating the need for weaving in ends since yarn tails become part of the finished fringe design. The construction method allows for customization based on available yarn weight and quantity, making it adaptable for different fiber types beyond traditional sock yarn.
Stitches Used
- Garter stitch as the primary stitch pattern, consisting only of knit stitches
- Increases worked throughout to create the shawl's triangular shape
- No purling required, simplifying the knitting process
The pattern features only one row to remember, meaning there is no distinction between right and wrong sides, making it beginner-friendly and forgiving for knitters still developing their skills.
Materials Required
- Leftover 4-ply sock yarn in any quantity from tiny scraps to small balls
- 3mm (US 2.5) circular needle
The pattern accommodates various yarn weights beyond 4-ply, including 3-ply options, allowing knitters flexibility in fiber selection based on their stash contents.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as beginner-level, making it accessible to knitters new to shawl construction. The simple garter stitch, lack of purling, and single-row repeat minimize complexity while still producing an elegant finished garment.
