The sample shown uses a single 100g skein of 4ply / fingering weight yarn but you could make this shawl much larger if preferred and the pattern includes details on how to do so. The pattern includes both written and charted instructions.
Anivia Shawlette by Claire Slade
What is Being Made
Anivia is a triangular lace shawlette designed as an accessible introduction to lace knitting. This elegant garment is engineered to use a single 100g skein of 4ply or fingering weight yarn, making it an economical project for knitters exploring decorative shawl construction. The finished shawlette measures 56 inches wide by 28 inches at its deepest point (142 x 71 centimeters), creating a versatile accessory suitable for layering or wearing as a lightweight wrap.
Construction Method and Pattern Design
Anivia employs a sideways knitting technique, beginning from one corner of the triangle. This construction method uses increases worked along only one edge to shape the garment, a streamlined approach that simplifies shaping while building the triangular silhouette. The pattern's straightforward logic makes it particularly suitable for knitters new to lace work. The design is also scalable: knitters may continue working the main section beyond the standard dimensions to create a larger shawl, provided they reserve at least 5% of their total yardage for the final edging and bind-off.
Lace Stitches and Techniques
The shawlette features a simple lace pattern that introduces fundamental lace knitting principles without overwhelming complexity. Lace knitting combines yarn overs—which create decorative holes and openwork—with decreases that maintain stitch count while producing the characteristic delicate appearance. This particular pattern demonstrates how basic lace techniques can produce sophisticated visual results, making it an ideal teaching project for knitters transitioning from stockinette and garter stitch fundamentals.
Materials and Specifications
- Yarn: 420 yards / 384 meters of 4ply or fingering weight yarn (sample shown in Eden Cottage Tempo 4ply)
- Needles: 3.75mm / US5 needles
- Gauge: 16 stitches by 24 rows equals 4 inches / 10 centimeters in lace pattern, blocked
The designer notes that while gauge is not critical to the project's success, variations in gauge will affect yardage requirements and final dimensions. Blocking is essential for lace projects, as it opens up the lace pattern and sets the shawl's shape and drape.
Difficulty Level
Classified as a beginner-appropriate pattern, Anivia provides an excellent entry point for knitters ready to explore lace construction. The simple lace pattern, combined with the straightforward sideways construction and minimal shaping, creates a manageable learning experience that builds confidence in decorative knitting techniques.
