Product Description

I absolutely LOVE this bear! He's one of the few animals I've designed that I refuse to let go of my original sample!

He's big and cuddly, and reminds me of the teddy bear I had when I was little. My teddy bear was named 'teddy', and he was medium brown with a cute tan snout. I had him for years and dragged him around everywhere with me!

So, when I set out to design a teddy bear, I wanted to make one that would stand up to the test of time like my teddy. That's when it hit me: felting! By felting your crochet, the teddy bear is extra-durable and thick-skinned, but still super-soft and loveable.

He'll make a fantastic friend for the child in your life! (yes, even if the child in your life is yourself ;) )

This adorable bear stacks up at 11 inches tall! Gerry is a fantastic beginning project for felting: it's so easy! You crochet the pieces from a wool yarn, and then toss them in the washing machine, and magic happens! This project is crocheted holding two strands of yar

Amigurumi Gerry the Felted Bear

What is Being Made

Gerry the Felted Bear is an amigurumi toy designed by Stacey Trock, standing 11 inches tall when completed. This is a stuffed crochet bear intended as a decorative or play toy, created using the amigurumi technique—a Japanese method of crocheting small, three-dimensional stuffed figures. The finished bear features animal eyes and a nose for realistic detail and is designed to be felted after crocheting to create a soft, textured surface.

Crochet Techniques Used

This intermediate-level project employs several fundamental crochet techniques to construct the bear's three-dimensional form. The pattern utilizes stitching in the back loop as a primary construction method, which creates a specific texture and structure throughout the piece. The bear is worked in the round, a common amigurumi technique that allows for seamless, continuous spiral construction of cylindrical and spherical components that form the bear's body, head, limbs, and other features.

The pattern incorporates felting, a post-crochet finishing technique that transforms the crocheted fabric. Felting involves agitation and moisture to compress and mat the wool fibers, creating a denser, more compact, and softer finished texture. This process gives the completed bear its distinctive felted appearance and feel, distinguishing it from traditional unfelted amigurumi.

Stitches Used

The construction of Gerry relies on essential crochet stitches appropriate for amigurumi work:

  • Chain (ch) — Used to create foundation chains and increase stitches as needed
  • Single Crochet (sc) — The primary stitch for building the bear's body, head, and limbs, providing tight, dense fabric suitable for stuffed toys
  • Single Crochet 2 Together (sc2tog) — A decrease stitch used to shape and reduce stitches, essential for forming the bear's contours and closing sections
  • Double Crochet (dc) — Used selectively within the pattern for specific shaping or textural elements

Materials and Yarn

The pattern requires 3 skeins of worsted weight yarn in brown (approximately 220 yards per skein, totaling roughly 660 yards) for the main color (MC), and less than 1 skein of tan or latte-colored worsted weight yarn for secondary color (SC) accents. The designer specifies 100% wool worsted weight yarn as essential, as the felting process requires animal fiber to work properly. The sample uses Ella Rae Classic in brown and Brown Sheep Company Nature Spun in Latte, though any worsted weight wool yarn capable of felting is suitable.

Additional materials include a Size L crochet hook, which is appropriate for worsted weight yarn and creates the proper fabric density for amigurumi. The project also requires handfuls of polyester stuffing to fill the bear's body and create its three-dimensional shape, two 18mm brown animal eyes for facial features, a brown animal nose, like-colored sewing thread, and a sewing needle for attaching safety features and closing seams after crocheting and felting.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate, making it suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle more complex projects. The intermediate classification reflects the combination of techniques required: working in the round, managing increases and decreases, stuffing and shaping a three-dimensional form, and executing the felting finish. While not a beginner project, it remains accessible to those with basic crochet experience.
