Amigurumi Forrest the Garden Gnome Crochet Pattern
What is Being Made
Forrest the Garden Gnome is a handmade amigurumi doll designed by Stacey Trock. This stuffed crochet gnome stands approximately 9 inches tall and was originally created in January 2012. The project is ideal for crafters looking to create a charming, three-dimensional decorative doll or toy using fundamental amigurumi construction techniques.
Craft and Techniques
This is a crochet project classified at an intermediate difficulty level. The pattern utilizes classic amigurumi methodology, which involves crocheting flat pieces in the round and then stuffing and assembling them to create a dimensional character. The gnome is constructed from multiple crocheted components that are joined together to form the complete figure, making it an excellent project for developing shaping and assembly skills in amigurumi work.
Stitches Used
The pattern employs fundamental crochet stitches essential to amigurumi construction:
- Chain (ch) – used to create foundation loops and increase stitches
- Single crochet (sc) – the primary stitch for building dense, structured fabric
- Single crochet 2 together (sc2tog) – used for decreasing stitches and shaping the doll's form
Materials and Yarn
The pattern is designed with flexibility in yarn weight selection. The sample shown is crocheted in worsted weight yarn using Ella Rae Classic (100% wool). The recommended yardages for the sample are: 55 yards of blue (Ella Rae Classic color #76) for the main color, 70 yards of white (Ella Rae Classic color #01), and 55 yards of red (Ella Rae Classic color #31) for accent colors. The pattern notes that crafters may substitute any yarn weight by following the ball band hook recommendations and adjusting as needed. For a larger, extra-cuddly version, bulky weight yarn can be used, though this will require increased yardage.
Tools and Notions
- Size H (5.0mm) crochet hook – recommended for worsted weight yarn
- Tapestry needle – for weaving in yarn ends and assembling pieces
- 12mm black animal eyes – for facial features
- Polyester fiberfill stuffing – a few handfuls needed for filling the completed doll
