Alpaca are beautiful creatures with very endearing faces, and they produce lovely soft yarn. This pattern has all the details to make two sizes of alpaca - a cute baby (or cria) and an adult. Try to use yarn with at least some alpaca content.
The pattern is written using US crochet terms, and the list of abbreviations includes the UK alternatives.
You will need:
Yarn A: main colour, use approx 70g double knitting (DK) weight yarn for adult alpaca, approx 50g for baby alpaca.
Yarn B: secondary colour for face and ears, use approx 10g DK weight yarn for either size alpaca.
Small amount of black yarn to sew features.
Finished size: Adult approximately 21 cm (8.5") tall, baby approximately 17 cm (7") tall.
This downloadable crochet pattern allows you to create an adorable alpaca family consisting of two sizes: an adult alpaca and a baby alpaca (known as a cria). The pattern is designed by Lucy Collin and provides complete instructions for crafting both garments with realistic proportions and charming facial details that capture the endearing expressions alpacas are known for.
Amigurumi is a Japanese crochet technique used to create small, stuffed three-dimensional toys and figurines. This craft involves working in continuous rounds using single crochet stitches to build compact, tightly-crocheted fabric that holds its shape beautifully when stuffed. The Alpaca Family pattern is classified as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to tackle shaping, assembly, and embellishment techniques.
While the specific stitch list is not detailed in the pattern overview, amigurumi construction typically relies on fundamental crochet stitches including single crochet for the main fabric, increases and decreases for shaping the body parts, and slip stitches for joining rounds. The pattern guides you through creating distinct body components—such as the head, body, legs, ears, and snout—which are then assembled together using a tapestry needle and yarn. Safety eyes are inserted to bring the alpacas to life with expressive faces.
The pattern calls for the following materials and quantities:
The pattern notes that alpacas produce lovely soft yarn. If you can source a yarn containing at least some alpaca fibre, it will impart a wonderfully soft texture to your finished amigurumi, creating a tactile quality that complements the subject matter beautifully.
The pattern produces two distinct finished sizes: one adult alpaca and one baby alpaca. The exact dimensions are designed to be proportionate to one another, allowing you to create a charming family set.
