ALISON Girlish Sleeveless Jumper
What is Being Made
ALISON is a sleeveless cotton jumper designed for bigger children aged 8–12 years. This plain-colored summer top features a simple lace pattern worked from a chart, making it an ideal lightweight garment for warm weather. The jumper is available in three sizes (8 years, 10 years, and 12 years) with corresponding chest measurements of 74–82 cm and lengths of 46–54 cm. The design includes eight shell buttons for closure and fastening details.
Knitting Techniques Used
ALISON employs several fundamental knitting techniques suited to intermediate-level crafters. The garment is worked flat as one continuous piece from the right front across the back to the left front using circular needles, which streamlines construction and minimizes seaming. The borders throughout the jumper are worked in garter stitch, a classic technique that creates a textured, reversible fabric ideal for edges and finishing. The central design feature is a lace pattern worked from a chart, which introduces openwork and visual interest to the plain-colored base fabric. This combination of garter stitch borders with charted lace creates a balanced, wearable design suitable for children's summer wear.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The primary stitches used in ALISON are:
- Stocking stitch – the main fabric base, providing a smooth, classic knit appearance
- Garter stitch – used for all borders and edges to frame the design and add structure
- Lace pattern – a charted lace motif that forms the decorative centerpiece of the jumper
The tension or gauge is critical for proper fit: 22 stitches and 32 rows in stocking stitch on 3½ mm needles equals 10 cm (4 inches). Maintaining this gauge ensures the jumper will achieve the intended measurements.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
ALISON is designed to be knitted in DK-weight cotton yarn. The yardage requirements vary by size: 200 grams (approximately 250 meters) for size 8 years, 225 grams for size 10 years, and 300 grams for size 12 years. The original design was created using CABLÉ, a 100% Egyptian cotton yarn produced by Campolmi Roberto Filati in Florence, Italy. This premium fiber choice ensures breathability and durability suitable for children's summer clothing.
Additional materials include eight shell buttons measuring 17.5 mm, sourced from Wool Warehouse in England, which provide both functional and aesthetic closure elements.
Needles and Tools
The pattern requires two needle sizes to accommodate different stitch densities:
- 2½ mm needles – used for ribbing and border sections to create a tighter, more elastic fabric
- 3½ mm needles – used for the main body and lace pattern sections
Both straight and circular needles in sizes 2½ mm and 3½ mm are necessary, as the garment is worked flat using circular needles as a convenient tool for holding stitches across the wider body sections.
Design Summary
ALISON combines simplicity with subtle elegance, making it an accessible project for intermediate knitters seeking to expand their skills with charted lace work. The sleeveless construction, cotton fiber content, and lace detailing create a versatile summer piece that transitions well between casual and dressed-up occasions. The use of garter stitch borders provides visual definition and structural support, while the charted lace pattern adds sophistication without overwhelming the design.
