Product Description

This pattern is for socks knitted with toe-up method, Judy’s magic cast on method (Turkish cast on is great too for this pattern) for toe, German short row technique for the heel.

The socks begins with contrast colour and toe, then you change the colour for main colour and knit the design only on top of foot. Make the heel with contrast colour and then change for contrast colour to knit the design all around the ankle and finish with the cuff with contrast colour.

Aksana Socks by L Rose

What is Being Made

Aksana Socks is a downloadable knitting pattern for a pair of socks designed by L Rose. This project creates finished socks using a two-color colorwork design that features contrast detailing on the toe, heel, and cuff, with the main color showcasing the pattern across the foot and leg.

Knitting Techniques

The Aksana Socks pattern employs several intermediate-level knitting techniques to create its finished structure:

  • Toe-up construction: The socks are knitted beginning at the toe and working upward toward the cuff, allowing for precise fit adjustments at the leg opening.
  • Judy's magic cast on method: This specialized cast-on technique creates a seamless, elastic foundation for the toe. The pattern notes that Turkish cast on works equally well as an alternative.
  • German short row technique: Used to shape and construct the heel with smooth, reinforced stitches that provide durability in this high-wear area.
  • Two-color colorwork: The pattern incorporates contrast color changes strategically—beginning with the contrast color for the toe, switching to main color for the foot design, returning to contrast color for the heel, and finishing with contrast color around the leg and cuff.
  • Circular knitting: The socks are worked in the round using either small circumference circular needles or double-pointed needles to create seamless fabric.

Stitches and Stitch Markers

The Aksana pattern uses standard knitting stitches combined with stitch marker placement to track pattern repeats and shaping. Two stitch markers (designated M1 and M2 in the pattern) are used to indicate key points in the design and construction sequence, helping knitters maintain pattern accuracy throughout the sock.

Materials and Tools

Yarn: The pattern calls for 4 ply yarn or fingering/sock yarn in two colors. The contrast color requires 1 skein of 50 grams for the toe, heel, and cuff. The main color requires 1 skein of 100 grams for the sock body and leg. The designer used 100 grams of Fingering yarn from Rose et balles de laine Atelier for the main color and 1 ball of Drops Fabel 50 grams in Purple for the contrast color in the sample shown.

Needles and notions: Knitters will need 2.5 mm circular needles with small circumference and/or 2.5 mm double-pointed needles (20 cm length). A 2.5 mm cable needle, 2 stitch markers, a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, and scissors complete the required tools.

Gauge

The pattern specifies a gauge of 28 stitches and 36 rows over 10 centimeters (4 inches) when worked in stockinette stitch on 2.5 mm needles. Achieving proper gauge is essential for creating socks that fit correctly.

Difficulty Level

Aksana Socks is rated as an intermediate-level knitting project. While the pattern uses fundamental knitting techniques, the combination of multiple construction methods—including Judy's magic cast on, German short rows, and two-color colorwork—makes it suitable for knitters with some experience beyond basic stockinette stitch.
