Product Description
This is a one-size, knitted afikomen cover, knitted in one piece with light seaming and an added button and optional duplicate stitch pattern. The vertical stripes are done using a fancy laddering technique - it’s much easier than it looks! You have three options for the color work. Choosing to do without, choosing to do it with duplicate stitch, or using the ladder technique.
I knitted this using self-dyed DK swish yarn from Knitpicks and with US 6/4mm needles. This is a 100% merino wool DK yarn, but you can use any yarn and needle combo that achieves gauge! You need such a small amount of yarn in both colors that it’s a great stash buster or an excuse to make two matching but inverted covers! I used 42g (100yds) of my main color and 12g (30yds) of my contrast color.
This is a VERY beginner friendly pattern, knitted flat, simple seaming, and the option to make it as complicated with color or as simple as you want!

What is Being Made
This is a one-size knitted afikomen cover designed to hold matzah during Passover celebrations. The cover is knitted in a single piece and features vertical stripes, with finishing details including light seaming, an added button, and an optional duplicate stitch pattern for decorative color work.
Knitting Techniques
The afikomen cover employs several intermediate techniques to create visual interest and functionality:
- Laddering Technique: The vertical stripes are created using a fancy laddering technique, which the designer notes is easier than it appears. This method adds visual appeal without requiring complex color changes throughout the knitting process.
- Duplicate Stitch: An optional decorative technique that allows crafters to add color work after the main knitting is complete, offering flexibility for personalization.
- Seaming: Light seaming is used to join pieces together, creating a finished, professional appearance.
- Button Application: A button is added as a functional and decorative closure element.
Stitches Used
While the pattern emphasizes the laddering technique for creating vertical stripes, it accommodates multiple approaches to color work. Crafters can choose to knit without additional stitch patterns, incorporate duplicate stitch embroidery, or use the ladder technique for striping. This flexibility makes the project accessible to knitters at different skill levels.
Materials and Yarn Weight
The afikomen cover is designed to work with DK or sport weight yarn. The designer's sample was knitted using self-dyed DK swish yarn from Knitpicks, which is 100% merino wool. The pattern is worked on US 6/4mm needles. However, the designer notes that any yarn and needle combination that achieves the specified gauge will work successfully.
The cover is designed to fit snugly around a piece of matzah at the recommended gauge. Crafters who prefer a looser fit can adjust by going up a needle size or selecting a slightly thicker yarn weight.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as beginner-friendly, making it an excellent introduction to knitting projects with decorative techniques. Despite featuring a laddering technique that might initially seem complex, the designer emphasizes that the method is straightforward to execute.
