Materials For this monkey you'll need worsted weight yarn and an E US/3.5 mm crochet hook. You'll need three colours of yarn: warm grey (1/3 of a 100 yard skein), rust (1/3) and dark brown (black, 1/8). The quantities are estimates. For the eyes I've used 12 mm animal eyes. You will also need fibrefill and pellets for extra weight in the body (I use Hama beads). Lopi colour numbers: 0057, 9427and 0052.
Adi the Monkey Crochet Pattern by Son's Popkes
What is Being Made
Adi is an amigurumi-style crochet monkey toy designed by Sonja van der Wijk. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished stuffed monkey approximately 5.5 inches (14 cm) tall when made with the recommended yarn and tension. The toy is suitable for intermediate-level crocheters and makes an ideal handmade gift or decorative piece.
Crochet Techniques Used
This pattern employs several fundamental amigurumi construction techniques:
- Working in the round – The entire doll is constructed using spiral rounds rather than joined rounds, creating seamless cylindrical sections for the body, head, limbs, and other components
- Stitch markers – Recommended for tracking the beginning of each round as you work in continuous spirals
- Color changes – The pattern includes detailed color-change instructions, with complicated transitions color-coded in the PDF for easy reference. Color changes are executed in the final loop of each stitch to ensure the new color appears on the hook
- Stuffing and shaping – Standard amigurumi practice of filling pieces with fiberfill as you work to create a three-dimensional toy
Crochet Stitches Used
While the PDF excerpt does not list all stitches exhaustively, amigurumi patterns of this type typically employ foundational crochet stitches including single crochet for tight, dense fabric that holds stuffing securely. The pattern is written in standard American crochet terminology, making it accessible to crocheters familiar with US conventions.
Materials and Yarn
The pattern is designed for worsted-weight yarn. The designer strongly recommends using a fuzzy yarn for optimal results, as the texture enhances the toy's appeal and realism. The specific yarn used in the original design is Istex Lètt lopi, a 100% wool yarn, which provides both the fuzzy texture and the durability needed for a handmade toy.
The finished size of your monkey will vary depending on your yarn weight and crochet tension. Experimenting with different yarn weights and hook sizes allows you to customize the final dimensions of your Adi toy. The pattern also recommends adjusting eye size based on your yarn choice and personal preference, despite specific recommendations provided in the instructions.
Pattern Format and Difficulty
This is a downloadable PDF pattern suitable for intermediate crocheters. The intermediate difficulty level reflects the combination of working in spirals, managing color changes, and assembling multiple pieces into a cohesive toy. The pattern is clearly written with helpful guidance on reading instructions before beginning and detailed explanations of color-change techniques to support successful completion.
