Product Description
This very simple little bag, inspired both by the textures and shapes of acorns but also by the broad structure of medieval style purses, can be knit with any yarn and suitable needles. I suggest fingering/4ply yarn and 2.5mm or dk/sport and 3.5mm needles for example. The pattern lends itself particularly well to magic loop technique although any in-the-round technique will work just fine.
Yardage needed will vary depending on the yarn you choose, but it takes very little (my 4ply version needed just 16g of yarn for example), really good for finishing part balls as a stash buster.
After knitting, the purse may be very lightly fulled to firm up the texture, though testers have also worked it in yarn that does not full with good effect.
Trim to suit, a button closure, a drawstring, maybe even a simple shoulder strap, this is a quick, easy to knit bag which lends itself well to minor variations.
Acorn Purse by Sally Pointer
What Is Being Made
The Acorn Purse is a small knitted pouch designed as a quick and straightforward project suitable for beginners. This little bag functions as a practical accessory that can be customized with drawstrings and finished with a button or toggle closure. The purse is versatile enough to accommodate creative variations, such as the addition of a shoulder strap or experimentation with different stitch patterns on the flap.
Craft and Technique
This is a knitting project that employs the magic-loop technique, which allows knitters to work in the round using circular needles without requiring a full set of double-pointed needles. The pattern is designed to work with various yarn weights, making it adaptable to different stash materials and needle sizes. After the knitting is complete, the finished piece undergoes light fulling, a wet-finishing process that firms up the fabric and creates a more substantial, durable pouch.
Stitches Used
The Acorn Purse incorporates several fundamental knitting stitches and techniques:
- k2tog (knit two together) – a basic decrease stitch
- ssk (slip, slip, knit) – another decrease technique worked by slipping two stitches and knitting them together
- yo (yarn over) – creates decorative eyelets and lace effects
- kfb (knit front and back) – an increase stitch that adds stitches to the working row
Materials and Needles
The Acorn Purse offers flexibility in yarn selection. Knitters may choose between two primary yarn weight options:
- 4ply or fingering weight yarn paired with 2.5mm needles
- Sport or DK weight yarn paired with 3.5mm needles
Other yarn weights are suitable as well; the key is selecting needles that produce a comfortably compact knit, as this ensures the light fulling process will work effectively. Needles may be double-pointed needles (dpns) or circular needles, with circular needles being particularly well-suited to the magic-loop method. A blunt needle for weaving in ends is also required for finishing. Gauge is noted as fairly irrelevant for this project, provided the knitter achieves a nice, even knit texture. Optional finishing materials include a button or toggle for fastening the purse.
