Product Description
Knitting pattern, dish cloth, face cloth, blanket square, wash cloth This square is the pattern from a swiss card game, the Acorn from the Jasskarten. the other 3 be uploaded as well
My patterns are all in German and English, in US terms. My patterns are all created by myself which I really enjoy. It takes a while to create a pattern, knit it and write everything down but if there are any issues please do not hesitate to send me a message either here or on my Instagram account _Lovelyyarns.
I love creating squares and eventually sew them together to a beautiful baby blanket, car blanket, throw or big blanket.
This is a pattern to Knit your own Knitted square which can be used as face cloth, dish cloth, wash cloth, wall decoration or my personal favourite as a square for blankets. Perfect as a gift or just to keep 😊
Acorn Knitted Granny Square by Karin Burkart
What is Being Made
The Acorn Square is a versatile knitted square pattern designed by Karin Burkart that functions as a standalone dishcloth, facecloth, or washcloth. However, the pattern is particularly well-suited for creating larger projects by combining multiple squares together. The designer recommends knotting several squares together and sewing them to construct a complete baby blanket, making this an ideal modular building block for blanket and throw projects.
Finished Dimensions
The finished size of each square varies depending on the yarn weight selected:
- DK Weight: Approximately 15 x 15 cm
- Aran Weight: Approximately 18 x 18 cm
Yarn and Materials
This pattern is designed to work with cotton yarn in two weight options. Cotton fiber is specified for all versions, providing a breathable, durable fabric suitable for dishcloths and baby blankets.
- DK Cotton Version: Approximately 18 grams of DK weight cotton yarn, worked on 3mm knitting needles
- Aran Cotton Version: Approximately 25 grams of Aran weight cotton yarn, worked on 4mm knitting needles
Gauge and Stitch Count
Proper gauge is essential for achieving the correct finished dimensions. The pattern provides specific gauge measurements for each yarn weight option:
- DK Gauge: 22 stitches x 32 rows over 10 x 10 cm
- Aran Gauge: 20 stitches x 28 rows over 10 x 10 cm
Each square consists of 36 stitches and 48 rows total.
Knitting Techniques and Stitch Details
The Acorn Square employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners. The pattern uses a structured border and slip stitch edging to create neat, finished edges.
- Border Construction: The first and last 3 rows form the top and bottom borders, while the first and last 3 stitches of each row create the side borders. All border stitches are worked in knit stitch.
- Edge Finishing: The first stitch of every row is worked as a slip stitch as if to purl, which creates a more polished and refined border appearance compared to standard knit stitches.
- Cast On and Cast Off: Both the cast on and cast off edges should be worked loosely to ensure flexibility and prevent puckering when squares are joined together.
Stitches Used
This beginner-friendly pattern utilizes basic knitting abbreviations and stitches:
- kn (knit): The fundamental knit stitch used throughout the pattern, particularly for the border areas
- pr (purl): The purl stitch, which creates texture variation within the square
- sl1p (slip one purl wise): A slip stitch worked as if to purl, used at the beginning of each row to create a neat selvage edge
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as beginner level, making it an excellent choice for knitters new to the craft or those looking to practice fundamental techniques. The straightforward stitch combinations and simple construction method allow beginners to build confidence while creating a practical, finished item.
Project Versatility
While suitable for individual use as dishcloths or washcloths, the true strength of the Acorn Square lies in its modular design. By creating multiple squares in coordinating or contrasting colors, knitters can assemble them into larger blankets and throws. This approach makes the pattern accessible for creating heirloom-quality baby blankets without requiring complex shaping or advanced techniques.
