A Clowder of Cats Crochet Pattern
Project Overview
A Clowder of Cats is a crochet toy pattern designed by Moji-Moji Design and published in 2019. This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for creating a collection of crocheted cat toys, perfect for crafters seeking an intermediate-level amigurumi project. The pattern uses DK weight yarn and is written in American crochet terminology, making it accessible to crocheters familiar with standard US conventions.
What You'll Create
This pattern enables you to make multiple cat toys as part of a coordinated collection. The project falls under the amigurumi category—three-dimensional stuffed toys created through crochet techniques. Each cat in the clowder is individually crafted, allowing for creative variations and a charming grouping of completed pieces.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
The pattern employs fundamental crochet stitches and techniques suitable for intermediate crafters:
- Chain stitch (ch) — Used for foundation and structural elements
- Single crochet (sc) — Primary stitch for building the toy structure
- Double crochet (dc) — Incorporated for varied texture and shaping
- Slip stitch (slst) — Used for joining rounds and finishing
- Invisible decrease (invdec) — A specialized decreasing technique specifically recommended for amigurumi work, creating tight, seamless decreases that maintain the polished appearance of stuffed toys
Pattern Structure and Abbreviations
The pattern uses clear notation with standard crochet abbreviations and symbols to guide crafters through each step:
- Round brackets ( ) indicate groups of stitches worked into the same stitch or space, stitch counts upon completion, or explanatory notes
- Square brackets [ ] contain stitch groups to be repeated the specified number of times
- Measurements provided in both centimeters (cm) and inches (" )
- Yarn weight specified in grams (g) and millimeters (mm)
- Rnd(s) denotes rounds; st(s) denotes stitches
Materials and Yarn Requirements
This pattern calls for DK weight yarn, a medium-light yarn weight ideal for creating detailed amigurumi with good stitch definition. The pattern specifies yarn quantities in grams, allowing crafters to choose any DK weight yarn in their preferred colors. Standard crochet hooks appropriate for DK yarn are required, along with fiberfill stuffing for filling the completed toys.
Skill Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern assumes familiarity with basic crochet stitches and techniques. Crafters should be comfortable reading pattern abbreviations, working in rounds, and executing decreases. The invisible decrease technique, while explained in the pattern, represents a skill-building opportunity for those advancing their amigurumi construction abilities.
