Pattern Summary: 859 Kurrajong – Women's Lace Pullover Knitting Pattern by Julie Turjoman
About This Design
The 859 Kurrajong is a beautifully considered women's pullover knitting pattern designed by Julie Turjoman. The sweater's name and its central decorative motif are both inspired by the distinctive seedpod of the Australian Kurrajong tree, giving this modern knitwear design a meaningful botanical identity. The result is a stylish, slightly cropped pullover with a relaxed, contemporary feel — ideal for chilly autumn days. The design balances visual interest with wearability, making it a wardrobe staple that feels both elevated and effortless.
Garment Details and Sizing
The Kurrajong pullover is worked in a slightly cropped length with subtle A-line shaping that gently widens from the hem toward the bust, creating a flattering silhouette without being overly fitted. It is designed to be worn with 2 to 4 inches of positive ease, meaning the finished garment is intentionally larger than the wearer's actual bust measurement for a comfortable, relaxed fit.
- Available sizes: XS, S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL
- Finished bust measurements: 34 (38, 42, 46, 50, 54, 58) inches
- The sample shown in the pattern is knitted in Size S (38-inch bust) in Color 1, Cream.
Techniques Used
This pattern is rated intermediate in difficulty, making it well suited to knitters who are comfortable with the basics and ready to explore more structured construction methods and decorative stitch work. The Kurrajong pullover draws on a thoughtful combination of techniques:
- Bottom-up construction: The sweater is begun at the lower hem and worked upward, a classic approach that allows knitters to easily adjust length before committing to the upper body shaping.
- Worked in the round: Circular knitting is used for seamless sections of the garment, eliminating the need for seaming and producing a smooth, professional finish on the body and sleeves.
- Worked flat: Certain sections are worked back and forth in rows, adding structural variety and allowing for precise shaping where needed.
- Seamless construction: The overall design minimizes seaming, keeping finishing work simple and the fabric continuous for a polished result.
- Lace: The signature lace motif — inspired by the Kurrajong seedpod — is described as easy and modern, making it approachable for intermediate knitters while still delivering a striking decorative effect. Lace knitting typically involves a combination of yarn-overs and decreases worked in a deliberate sequence to create open, patterned fabric.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The Kurrajong pullover is primarily constructed in Stockinette stitch, which forms the smooth, classic knit fabric of the body. The gauge for this pattern is set in Stockinette. The lace motif is worked from a chart included in the pattern, which visually maps out the yarn-overs, decreases, and knit stitches that create the seedpod-inspired openwork design. Knitters should be comfortable reading a basic knitting chart to work this pattern successfully.
Yarn and Materials
The Kurrajong pullover is designed specifically for Valley Yarns Berkshire Bulky, a luxurious chunky-weight yarn composed of 85% Merino Wool and 15% Baby Alpaca. This blend is described as super-soft, combining the warmth and elasticity of fine Merino with the silky halo and lightness of Baby Alpaca — a pairing that makes the finished sweater both cozy and refined. Each skein contains 100 grams and 108 yards.
- Yarn quantity required: 6 (6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11) skeins depending on size
- Colorway shown: Color 1, Cream
