Product Description
This is a design in honour of our admiration of the Barred Owl family we came to know in Feb. 2020.
This is a pattern for a cushion cover. This cushion cover is worked in the round from a provisional cast-on and using the Fair-Isle knitting technique.

8 Accented Hoots Knit Cushion Pattern by Bunnymuff
Project Overview
8 Accented Hoots is an advanced knitting pattern designed by Mona Zillah of Bunnymuff for creating decorative knit cushions. This downloadable PDF pattern features a collection of owl-inspired designs, created as a tribute to a Barred Owl family. The pattern is suitable for experienced knitters looking to undertake a complex colorwork and construction project.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces knit cushions featuring accented owl motifs. The design incorporates multiple color variations and decorative elements, making these cushions suitable as home décor pieces that celebrate wildlife appreciation and nature-inspired textile art.
Yarn and Materials
The pattern calls for Shetland 4ply yarn by Gathered Sheep Yarns, a fingering-weight yarn composed of 100% Pure Shetland Wool. The yarn kit includes four coordinating colors:
- MC (Heathland) - Main Color; 45g (197 yards/180 meters)
- CC1 (Dove) - Contrast Color 1; 35g (153 yards/140 meters)
- CC2 (The Golden Ring) - Contrast Color 2; 17g (75 yards/68 meters)
- CC3 (Spring) - Contrast Color 3; 19g (83 yards/76 meters)
Additional yarn is included for embellishments. The pattern requires knitting needles appropriate for fingering-weight yarn construction.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This advanced pattern employs sophisticated knitting techniques suitable for experienced crafters. The construction includes the 3-needle bind-off method, a technique used to join two sets of live stitches together while simultaneously binding them off. This method creates a strong, finished seam and is commonly used in professional garment and accessory construction.
The 3-needle bind-off technique works by holding stitches to be bound off on two parallel needles. Using a third needle, the knitter knits the first stitch from the front needle together with the first stitch from the back needle. The process continues by knitting subsequent stitches together across both needles while passing the original stitch over the newly created stitch, repeating until all stitches are bound off.
The pattern incorporates colorwork design elements using the multiple contrast colors, requiring the knitter to manage color changes and maintain pattern integrity throughout the project. The use of fingering-weight yarn and the advanced construction methods indicate this is a project requiring strong foundational knitting skills and familiarity with intermediate to advanced techniques.
