642 Park Pullover – Seamless Top-Down Women's Jumper Knitting Pattern by Kirsten Hipsky
The 642 Park Pullover is a women's pullover jumper knitting pattern designed by Kirsten Hipsky and published under pattern number #642. Originally inspired by the popular Picnic Child's Pullover, this adult version has been adapted by popular demand into a soft, casual, and flattering garment for grown-up knitters. The design features elbow-length sleeves and a relaxed silhouette that makes it equally enjoyable to knit and to wear. Available as a downloadable PDF, this pattern is rated advanced beginner, making it an excellent next step for knitters who are comfortable with the basics and ready to tackle a full seamless garment construction.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a seamless women's pullover jumper with elbow-length sleeves and a relaxed, casual fit. The finished garment is worked in a simple but visually appealing combination of ribbing stripes and stockinette stitch, giving the fabric a rhythmic, textured look that is straightforward to execute. The pullover is offered in six finished chest sizes:
- 36 inches (the size shown in the sample photography)
- 40 inches
- 44 inches
- 48 inches
- 52 inches
- 56 inches
Because the garment is constructed top-down, both the sleeve length and the body length are easy to customize to suit individual fit preferences without requiring complex pattern math. This adaptability is one of the design's most practical features for knitters who need to adjust proportions.
Construction Technique: Seamless, Top-Down, Worked in the Round
The Park Pullover is constructed using a fully seamless, top-down method worked entirely in the round. This approach means there are no seams to sew up at the end, which is a significant advantage for knitters who prefer a clean, professional finish without the finishing work that seamed garments require. Working from the top down also allows the knitter to try the garment on as they go, making fit adjustments to the body and sleeve lengths straightforward and intuitive.
Top-down seamless construction typically begins at the neckline, with stitches increased outward to shape the yoke before the sleeves and body are separated and worked independently in the round. This method is particularly beginner-friendly in terms of finishing, even though the pattern is classified as advanced beginner due to the combination of techniques involved, including working with multiple circular needle lengths and double pointed needles.
Stitches Used
The 642 Park Pullover uses a focused set of stitches and techniques that are well within reach of an advancing beginner:
- Stockinette stitch (St st) – the primary fabric stitch, created by knitting every round when working in the round
- Ribbing – alternating knit and purl stitches worked in a stripe pattern alongside stockinette to create the signature Rib Stripe Pattern
- k2tog (knit 2 together) – a right-leaning decrease used for shaping
- ssk (slip, slip, knit) – a left-leaning decrease worked by slipping 2 stitches as if to knit, then knitting them together through the back loop
- m1L (make 1 left) – an increase made by lifting the strand between stitches from front to back and knitting into the back of it
- m1R (make 1 right) – an increase made by lifting the strand between stitches from back to front and knitting into the front of it
The Rib Stripe Pattern is worked on an even number of stitches in the round and alternates rounds of knitting with rounds of ribbing to create the garment's distinctive striped texture. Sleeve shaping is achieved through paired decreases worked at the beginning and end of designated rounds, maintaining the clean lines of the elbow-length sleeves.
