600 Picnic Child's Pullover - Top-Down Raglan Knitting Pattern
What is Being Made
The 600 Picnic Child's Pullover is a soft and comfortable knitted jumper designed for children ranging from size 2 through size 12. This pullover features a classic raglan construction with finished chest measurements available in six sizes: 22", 24", 26", 28", 30", and 32". The garment is worked seamlessly from the top down, making it an ideal project for knitters who want the flexibility to easily adjust sleeve and body lengths to achieve a custom fit for their child.
Techniques Used
This pattern employs top-down raglan construction, a popular technique that allows knitters to begin at the neckline and work downward toward the hem. This method provides several advantages: the ability to try on the garment as you work, the option to modify sleeve and body lengths without recalculating stitch counts, and the elimination of seaming since the piece is worked seamlessly in the round. The pattern uses circular knitting techniques, requiring both shorter and longer circular needles as the stitch count increases, as well as double-pointed needles for the yoke shaping.
Stitches Used
The 600 Picnic Child's Pullover features a simple and visually appealing stitch pattern that alternates between two main stitches:
- Stockinette Stitch (St st): The primary stitch used throughout most of the garment, creating smooth, flat fabric with a classic V-shaped texture on the right side
- Ribbing (K1, P1): Used in the Rib Stripe Pattern to create textured horizontal stripes that add visual interest and subtle elasticity to the design
The Rib Stripe Pattern is worked over an even number of stitches in the round and repeats every 12 rounds: 8 rounds of stockinette knit stitch followed by 4 rounds of alternating knit and purl stitches (K1, P1 ribbing). This straightforward stitch combination makes the pattern accessible while creating an engaging striped texture.
Materials and Gauge
The 600 Picnic Child's Pullover is designed to be worked in Valley Yarns Longmeadow, a DK weight yarn composed of 60% cotton and 40% microfiber. This fiber blend creates a breathable, soft fabric ideal for children's garments. The yarn is available in color 10 Lettuce, a fresh green shade. Yardage requirements range from 468 yards for the smallest size (4 skeins) to 1,053 yards for the largest size (9 skeins), with each skein containing 117 yards and weighing 50 grams.
The pattern is worked on US size 5 (3.75mm) circular needles in both 16" and 24" lengths, along with double-pointed needles of the same size for yoke shaping. The recommended gauge is 22 stitches and 30 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch, which is essential to achieve the correct finished measurements. Additional materials needed include 4 stitch markers to track raglan increases and scrap yarn to serve as a stitch holder.
Pattern Details and Design
Designed by Kirsten Hipsky, the 600 Picnic Child's Pullover is classified as an advanced beginner level pattern, making it suitable for knitters with some experience who are ready to tackle seamless in-the-round construction and basic shaping. The yoke begins with a small cast-on worked on shorter circular or double-pointed needles, with stitches distributed for the left sleeve, front, right sleeve, and back sections marked by stitch markers. The raglan shaping increases are worked at regular intervals to expand the yoke until all stitches are distributed across the longer circular needle, at which point the body and sleeves can be worked separately or continued as one piece depending on the knitter's preference.
The simple stripe pattern of stockinette and ribbing makes this pullover as enjoyable to knit as it is to wear, with the straightforward stitch work allowing knitters to focus on mastering top-down raglan construction without the complexity of intricate stitch patterns.
