Product Description

Valley Yarns Latana is the perfect women’s tee that can be worn layered or on its own knit in Toby. The simple tee looks fabulous with the easy to memorize stitch pattern. Latana is knit from the bottom up in the round to the underarm and then divided to work the front and back separately. The neckband stitches are picked up along the neck edge, worked back and forth, and then overlapped at the center. The armband stitches are picked up along the armhole edge and worked in the round. Toby by Valley Yarns is a smooth and sophisticated yarn. This yarn has a beautiful blend of Mako cotton, Mulberry silk, and cashmere, making it lovely to touch.

1293 Lantana – Women's Jumper Knitting Pattern by Vera Keller-Hum in Valley Yarns Toby

The Lantana is a beautifully relaxed women's pullover tee designed by Vera Keller-Hum and published by Valley Yarns in 2022. Whether worn on its own or layered over a shirt, this garment is designed to be both stylish and comfortable, offering a 3–5 inches of positive ease for a relaxed, flattering fit. The pattern is rated Adventurous Beginner, making it an ideal project for knitters who have mastered the basics and are ready to take on a full garment construction with a simple but engaging stitch pattern.

What Is Being Made

The Lantana is a seamless-to-the-underarm pullover tee for women, available in a wide range of sizes from XS through 4XL. Finished bust measurements range from 32¾ inches to 60¾ inches, making this an inclusive and versatile pattern. The sample shown in the pattern is knitted in size M and worked in Color 13 Rose. The garment features a ribbed hem and a textured stitch pattern on the body, giving it visual interest without requiring complex technique.

Construction Techniques

The Lantana uses a combination of construction methods that introduce adventurous beginners to the fundamentals of garment shaping:

  • Bottom-up construction: The body is cast on at the hem and worked upward toward the underarm, a logical and intuitive approach for newer garment knitters.
  • Worked in the round: The body is knitted seamlessly in the round on circular needles from the cast-on edge up to the underarm, eliminating side seams on the lower body and making the project faster and more enjoyable to work.
  • Divided at the underarm: At the underarm, the work is divided so that the front and back are each worked flat (back and forth) separately, allowing for armhole and neckline shaping.
  • Seamed finishing: Because the front and back yokes are worked separately after the divide, the finished pieces are joined using seaming, giving the garment structure and a clean finish.
  • Long-Tail Cast-On: The pattern specifically calls for the Long-Tail Cast-On method to begin the body, a popular and elastic cast-on well suited to ribbing.
  • Sleeve increases: Increases such as M1L, M1Lp, and M1R are used during sleeve shaping, introducing the knitter to make-one increase techniques that maintain the established stitch pattern.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The Lantana features a small selection of stitches that are easy to memorize and satisfying to work:

  • K2/P2 Rib: The hem begins with 2½ inches of knit 2, purl 2 ribbing, worked on smaller needles to create a neat, elastic edge that hugs the body.
  • Textured Pattern: The main body of the garment is worked in a Textured Pattern that is described as easy to memorize — ideal for knitting while watching television. This stitch pattern adds subtle visual depth to what would otherwise be a plain stockinette fabric.
  • Stockinette Stitch: The gauge is measured in stockinette stitch, and stockinette forms the structural foundation of the garment's construction.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

The Lantana is specifically designed for Valley Yarns Toby, a luxurious aran/DK weight yarn with a fiber composition of 83% Mako Cotton, 10% Mulberry Silk, and 7% Cashmere, sold in 50g/109-yard balls. This fiber blend gives the finished tee a beautiful drape, a soft hand, and a subtle sheen from the silk and cashmere content — making it a pleasure to wear in warmer months or as a layering piece. Depending on size, the pattern requires 6 to 15 balls of Valley Yarns Toby.
