1267 Helenium - Women's Knitting Pattern by Julie Turjoman

Project Overview

The 1267 Helenium is a modern pullover sweater designed by Julie Turjoman for Valley Yarns. This intermediate-level knitting pattern creates a scoop neck jumper that showcases the rustic tweed character and muted color palette of Valley Yarns Worthington yarn through a contemporary border design approach. The garment balances visual interest with elegant simplicity by concentrating stranded colorwork accents on specific areas rather than throughout the entire piece.

Design Features

  • Neckline: Scoop neck pullover construction
  • Colorwork Application: Stranded colorwork limited to the lower body and sleeves using a single contrast color, creating a subtle yet striking design element
  • Yoke Construction: Set-in yoke design where sleeves are worked separately and joined to the body at the base of the yoke
  • Fit: Designed with 2 to 4 inches of positive ease for comfortable wearing

Knitting Techniques

This pattern employs multiple construction methods to achieve its sophisticated silhouette. The garment is worked from the bottom up in the round, which allows for seamless construction in the body and creates a continuous fabric without side seams. The sleeves are worked separately and flat before being joined to the body, providing flexibility in shaping and fit. The stranded colorwork technique is used strategically on the lower body and sleeves, requiring the knitter to carry two colors of yarn simultaneously while knitting to create the pattern.

Stitches and Construction

While specific stitch patterns are not detailed in the available pattern information, the stranded colorwork method involves working with both main color and contrast color in the same rows, switching between them to create the border design. The seamless construction in the round minimizes finishing work and creates a polished, professional appearance.

Yarn and Materials

The pattern calls for Valley Yarns Worthington, a DK weight yarn composed of 50% Wool, 25% Alpaca, and 25% Viscose. This fiber blend provides warmth, softness, and a subtle sheen characteristic of the yarn's rustic tweed hand. The main color is Black (Color 07), with Moss (Color 11) used as the contrast color for the stranded colorwork sections.

  • Main Color (MC): 5 (6, 7, 8, 9) (9, 10, 11, 12) balls of Valley Yarns Worthington in Black, with each ball containing 50 grams and 174 yards
  • Contrast Color (CC): 2 skeins of Valley Yarns Worthington in Moss

Needles and Tools

The pattern requires US size 5 (3.75 mm) circular needles in two lengths—a 16-inch needle for working the neckline and upper sections, and a 32 to 40-inch needle for working the body in the round. Additionally, a set of 4 or 5 double-pointed needles in the same size is needed for working the sleeves and other small circumference sections.

Size Range and Finished Measurements

The 1267 Helenium is available in nine sizes ranging from extra small through 5XL, accommodating a wide range of body types. Bust measurements range from 32¾ inches in the XS size to 64¼ inches in the 5XL size. Hip measurements are similarly proportioned, ranging from 33¼ inches to 65 inches. The pattern is shown in size Small.

Skill Level

Rated as an intermediate knitting pattern, the 1267 Helenium requires solid foundational knitting skills including comfort with circular needle work, stranded colorwork techniques, and seamless garment construction. Knitters should be confident with increasing and decreasing stitches, managing multiple colors, and reading pattern charts before beginning this project.
