1:12th Scale Sampler Cot Cover for Dolls House

What is Being Made

This is a miniature cot quilt designed for 1:12th scale dolls house settings, created by designer Frances Powell. The finished piece comprises 24 small knitted squares that are stitched together to form a complete cot cover suitable for dolls house baby dolls. The project was originally published as a 2009 Advent Calendar design on Buttercup Miniatures Blog, making it an ideal pattern for crafters seeking a structured, multi-part knitting project with built-in pacing.

Project Structure and Design Philosophy

The cot cover is intentionally designed with simplicity in mind, allowing knitters to complete one square in approximately half an hour. This approach makes the project accessible to both novice and experienced knitters by breaking the overall work into manageable daily sessions. The pattern offers flexibility for customization—knitters who prefer to avoid certain techniques such as cables, Aran patterns, or multi-colour knitting can duplicate their favorite square designs in alternative colorways rather than attempting unfamiliar stitch patterns.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

The 24 squares feature varied knitting techniques suitable for miniature scale work. Due to the limited number of stitches inherent in small-scale knitting, lace stitches have been excluded from the designs. The patterns instead focus on fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques that work well at 1:12th scale, making them appropriate for the intermediate difficulty level. The variety of square designs provides opportunities to practice different stitch types while maintaining consistency with the dolls house aesthetic.

Materials and Specifications

The pattern requires Size 19 (1 mm/US size 5/0) knitting needles for working at this miniature scale. The yarn weight specified is cobweb, an extremely fine yarn suitable for detailed miniature work. To complete the entire cot cover, approximately 12 metres (or yards) of 1-ply yarn in each of six coordinating colours is needed, allowing for a multi-coloured finished piece with approximately 72 metres total yarn yardage for the complete project.

Suitable For

  • Dolls house enthusiasts and miniature crafters
  • Knitters seeking intermediate-level projects with flexible pacing
  • Crafters who prefer to work in small, accomplishable daily sessions
