1:12th Scale Monkey Toy by Frances Powell

What is Being Made

This is a miniature knitted monkey toy designed specifically for 1:12th scale dolls house settings. The pattern produces a realistic toy monkey with articulated limbs and a tail, suitable for decorating miniature interior scenes. The designer offers two size options: a larger monkey measuring approximately 1¼ inches wide and 1½ inches tall when sitting, or a smaller version at approximately 1 inch wide and 1¼ inches tall when sitting. Both versions exclude the tail measurement in width specifications.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

This advanced-level knitting project employs traditional hand-knitting techniques to construct a three-dimensional toy from flat knitted pieces. The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting methods including the knit stitch, purl stitch, slip stitch, and decrease techniques to shape individual body components. Pieces are knitted separately and then assembled together, with stuffing material inserted to create a dimensional, plush toy form. The designer provides flexibility in construction scale: the pattern can be executed at full size using standard needles and yarn, or scaled down further by substituting crochet cotton and smaller needles for an even tinier version.

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette stitch (sst) – The primary stitch structure, created by alternating knit rows and purl rows to produce the characteristic smooth, flat fabric surface
  • Knit stitch (k) – Foundation stitch worked across rows
  • Purl stitch (p) – Reverse stitch creating texture variation
  • Slip stitch (sl) – Used to move stitches between needles without working them, typically for shaping transitions
  • Decrease techniques – Stitches are worked together to reduce stitch count and shape body parts

Materials and Specifications

For the larger monkey: Size 19 (1.00 mm/US size 5/0) knitting needles are required. The yarn consists of 28 yards or 25 metres of 1-ply wool in brown for the main body, 14 yards or 12.5 metres of 1-ply wool in yellow for accent areas, and 7 yards or 6.5 metres of 1-ply wool in beige for additional details. A small amount of stuffing material completes the materials list.

For the smaller monkey variation: The pattern can be recreated using No 80 crochet cotton as the yarn substitute and size 21 (0.80 mm) knitting needles, producing a proportionally smaller finished toy.

Yarn weight: Cobweb weight 1-ply wool is the primary material, chosen for its extreme fineness and ability to produce delicate, detailed work appropriate to miniature scale. This ultra-fine yarn requires precision and patience, making the project suitable for experienced knitters only.

Pattern Details

Gauge is noted as non-critical for this toy project, as the finished size can vary based on individual knitting tension without compromising the toy's functionality or appearance. The pattern includes standard knitting abbreviations: st for stitch, k for knit, p for purl, sl for slip, sst for stockinette stitch, and dec. for decrease. This is pattern FP 76 from the Buttercup Miniatures collection, designed by Frances Powell and copyrighted in 2010.
