1:12th Scale Ladies Nightwear Accessories c.1920s

Designer: Frances Powell

This downloadable PDF pattern collection features three delicate 1:12th scale nightwear accessories designed to fit 5½-inch (14 cm) tall dolls house dolls. The designs capture authentic 1920s styling and are crafted using fine knitting and crochet techniques with cobweb-weight yarn, making them ideal for intermediate-level makers seeking to create miniature period-appropriate bedroom pieces.

Shoulder Wrap

The shoulder wrap is a charming layering piece measuring 4 inches (10 cm) wide by 2 inches (5 cm) high. This accessory is knitted using size 19 (1.00 mm/US size 5/0) knitting needles with 55 yards (50 metres) of 1-ply wool. The wrap features decorative trimming options: either 12 inches (30 cm) of narrow lace or a contrasting color 1-ply wool trim applied with a 0.60 mm crochet hook. This combination of knitting and crochet techniques creates an elegant finished edge that enhances the period authenticity of the piece.

Bedroom Slippers

The bedroom slippers are miniature footwear pieces measuring ¾ inch (2 cm) long and ⅜ inch (1 cm) high. They are knitted on size 19 (1.00 mm/US size 5/0) needles using 15 yards (12.5 metres) each of main color and contrast color 1-ply wool. The pattern includes optional instructions for adding thin cork or leather soles, allowing makers to customize the slippers with realistic sole materials. This optional embellishment adds authenticity and durability to the miniature footwear.

Sleeping Vest

The sleeping vest is the largest piece in the collection, standing 2½ inches (6.25 cm) tall by 1¼ inches (3 cm) wide. It is constructed using size 19 (1.00 mm/US size 5/0) knitting needles with 28 yards (25 metres) of 1-ply wool. The pattern incorporates ribbing that stretches to fit the doll's body, ensuring proper fit despite variations in individual dolls. Construction techniques include the use of a stitch holder and a 0.60 mm crochet hook for finishing details. Narrow ribbon is used for trimming, adding delicate period-appropriate embellishment to the neckline or armholes.

Materials and Techniques

  • Yarn Weight: Cobweb-weight 1-ply wool throughout all three pieces, chosen for its delicate appearance and authentic scale
  • Needles: Size 19 (1.00 mm/US size 5/0) knitting needles for all knitted components
  • Hooks: 0.60 mm crochet hook for edging and trim application
  • Primary Techniques: Knitting forms the foundation of all three pieces, with crochet used for decorative finishing and trim attachment
  • Finishing Materials: Narrow lace, contrast yarn, narrow ribbon, and optional cork or leather for soles

Difficulty and Gauge Considerations

Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern collection requires competency with both knitting and crochet techniques, as well as comfort working with extremely fine cobweb-weight yarn and miniature needles and hooks. The pattern notes that gauge is not critical, as dolls house dolls vary greatly in size and proportions, allowing makers flexibility in achieving proper fit. The ribbing on the sleeping vest provides built-in stretch to accommodate these natural variations.

This collection represents an excellent project for experienced miniaturists seeking to create historically accurate 1920s-era bedroom accessories for dolls house displays.
