1:12th Scale Ladies Beach Suit c.1946 by Frances Powell

Project Overview

This downloadable knitting pattern creates a complete miniature beach suit ensemble designed for 1:12th scale dolls house dolls approximately 5½ inches (14 cm) tall. The design captures authentic 1940s beachwear styling, consisting of three coordinated pieces: a pleated skirt, panties, and a brassière. The pattern was created by designer Frances Powell and is suitable for intermediate-level knitters with experience in miniature garment construction.

Garments Included

Pleated Skirt

The pleated skirt is the focal piece of this beach suit ensemble. The finished skirt measures 1½ inches (3.5 cm) in height with a ¾-inch (2 cm) waist width, creating properly proportioned miniature clothing. The pattern includes instructions for creating authentic pleats characteristic of 1940s beachwear design. A small length of cord or wool serves as a belt detail to complete the silhouette.

Panties

The panties component measures ¾ inch (2 cm) wide at the waist by 1¼ inches (3 cm) in total height. The pattern provides the option to incorporate a small length of very thin elastic for functional closures, though this is noted as optional depending on builder preference and material availability.

Brassière

The brassière measures 2¾ inches (7 cm) wide by ½ inch (1.25 cm) in height, excluding the ties and neck halter straps. This piece completes the authentic 1940s beach suit styling with period-appropriate construction details.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for miniature garment construction. The primary stitch used throughout the project is stockinette stitch (abbreviated as sst in the pattern), which is created by alternating knit rows and purl rows to produce the classic smooth, flat fabric surface. The pattern uses standard knitting abbreviations including k for knit, p for purl, and st for stitch, with parentheses indicating sections to be repeated as specified in the detailed instructions.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

This project requires size 19 (1.00 mm/US size 5/0) knitting needles, which are extremely fine needles essential for working with cobweb-weight yarn at 1:12th scale. The yarn weight specified is cobweb, an ultra-fine yarn category that produces the delicate fabric necessary for miniature dolls house clothing.

Total yarn requirements for the complete three-piece beach suit are 50 metres of 1-ply wool. The material breakdown is as follows:

  • Pleated skirt: 37.5 metres of 1-ply wool
  • Panties: 12.5 metres of 1-ply wool
  • Brassière: 12.5 metres of 1-ply wool

Additional materials include a small length of cord or wool for the skirt belt and brassière ties, and optionally, a small length of very thin elastic for the panties closure.

Difficulty Level and Gauge Notes

This pattern is classified as intermediate difficulty, requiring knitters to have solid foundational skills in basic stitches and garment assembly. The pattern notes that gauge is not critical for this project, as dolls house dolls vary considerably in size. This flexibility allows builders to adjust their tension and needle size slightly if needed to achieve proper fit on their specific doll.

Design Context

The 1946 date reference positions this beach suit within the post-World War II era of fashion, capturing the styling and construction methods of authentic vintage beachwear. The pattern's meticulous sizing and construction details make it suitable for collectors and miniature enthusiasts seeking historically accurate dolls house accessories.
