1:12th and 1:6th Scale Noel Sweater by Frances Powell

What is Being Made

This is a miniature knitted sweater designed to fit dollhouse dolls in two different scales. The pattern accommodates 1:12th scale dolls (approximately 6 inches/15 cm tall) and 1:6th scale dolls (approximately 13 inches/32.5 cm tall). The sweater features a classic pullover design with long sleeves and a fitted neckline, suitable for display on collectible dolls or in detailed dollhouse scenes.

Scale and Finished Dimensions

For 1:6th Scale:

  • Neck to hem: 12 cm (4½ inches)
  • Sleeve seam: 7.5 cm (3 inches)
  • Sleeve length: 12 cm (4½ inches)
  • Across chest: 7.5 cm (3 inches)

For 1:12th Scale:

  • Neck to hem: 6 cm (2½ inches)
  • Across chest: 4 cm (1½ inches)
  • Sleeve seam: 3 cm (1¼ inches)

Techniques Used

This advanced-level miniature knitting project employs specialized techniques appropriate for extremely fine-scale work. The pattern utilizes cable knitting as a decorative element, requiring the use of a cable needle to create twisted stitch patterns. Knitters must be comfortable with precision work at a dramatically reduced scale, managing stitches on needles as small as 1 mm in diameter for the 1:12th scale version.

Stitches and Construction

While specific stitch abbreviations are not detailed in the provided content, the cable work indicates the use of knit and purl stitches combined with cable crosses. The pattern is designed to work identically for both scales, with adjustments made only through yarn weight and needle size rather than stitch counts or construction methods. This demonstrates sophisticated pattern engineering for miniature work.

Materials and Yarn

For 1:12th Scale:

  • One pair 1 mm/US size 00000 knitting needles
  • 55 metres of 1-ply yarn
  • Cable needle (miniature size)

For 1:6th Scale:

  • One pair 2 mm knitting needles
  • 75 metres of 3-ply or light fingering weight yarn
  • Cable needle

The pattern acknowledges that suitable yarn substitutes may be necessary, particularly for the extremely fine 1-ply requirement in 1:12th scale work. The use of cobweb and 3-ply yarn weights reflects the delicate nature of miniature knitting, where standard yarn weights would be impossibly thick for the intended scale.

Difficulty Level

Rated as advanced, this pattern is explicitly not recommended as a first project in 1:12th scale miniature knitting. Knitters should have prior experience with miniature knitting techniques, cable work, and working with extremely fine needles and yarn before attempting this design. The combination of tiny scale, cable patterns, and precision required makes this suitable only for experienced miniature knitters.
