Product Description

Valley Yarns Robineau is a women’s top-down jumper featuring a gorgeous colourwork yoke knit in Worthington. The delicate colourwork sits graciously over the shoulders, and the contrast colour is echoed on the hem of the body and sleeves. Robineau is knit in the round from the top down with back neck shaping and then worked straight down to the hem with no shaping. Valley Yarns Worthington offers you soft, rustic tweeds and a subtle halo that will work up beautifully into garments you’ll want to wear again and again. The colourwork pattern is in chart form only.

1023 Robineau – Women's Stranded Colorwork Yoke Jumper Knitting Pattern by Julie Turjoman

The 1023 Robineau is a beautifully crafted women's pullover jumper designed by Julie Turjoman and published as a downloadable PDF pattern. This design centres on an elegant, delicate stranded colorwork yoke that drapes gracefully over the shoulders, giving the garment a refined yet relaxed aesthetic. With generous positive ease of 2–4 inches, the Robineau is conceived as an ideal layering piece — comfortable, wearable, and visually striking. The contrast colour used in the yoke's stranded motif is thoughtfully echoed on both the sleeve hems and the body hem, creating a cohesive, polished finish throughout the garment.

Garment Overview

The Robineau is a top-down, seamless yoke sweater worked entirely in the round. This construction method means knitters begin at the neckline and work downward through the yoke, then separate the sleeves from the body and continue each section independently — all without a single sewn seam. This approach is particularly popular among knitters who prefer to try on their work as they go and who enjoy a streamlined finishing process. The pattern is rated Intermediate in difficulty, making it well-suited to knitters who are comfortable with circular needles, basic shaping, and reading a colorwork chart, but who may not yet have extensive experience with complex multi-colour techniques.

Sizes and Fit

The pattern is offered in nine sizes: XS, S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL, 4XL, and 5XL, with finished bust measurements ranging from 33¾ inches up to 60¾ inches. The sample shown in the pattern is knitted in Size 36". The intentional positive ease built into the design ensures a relaxed, comfortable silhouette that works well over other garments or as a standalone piece.

Techniques Used

  • Top-down construction: The jumper begins at the neckband and is shaped downward through the yoke, allowing for easy fitting adjustments as the knitting progresses.
  • Seamless knitting: The entire garment is worked in the round, eliminating the need for seaming and creating a smooth, uninterrupted fabric.
  • Stranded colorwork: The yoke features a two-colour stranded pattern using the main colour (MC) in Navy (colour 09) and the contrast colour (CC) in Orchid (colour 14). In stranded knitting, both yarns are carried across the back of the work, with the working colour brought forward as needed to create the pattern. This technique produces a slightly thicker, warmer fabric in the yoke area.
  • Worked in the round: Circular needles and double-pointed needles are used throughout, transitioning between needle lengths as the stitch count changes.
  • LLI (Left Lifted Increase): Increases in the yoke are worked using the Left Lifted Increase method, which creates a neat, nearly invisible increase by lifting the left leg of the stitch below the last stitch worked.
  • Wrap and turn (W&T): Short-row shaping is incorporated using the wrap and turn method, commonly used to add depth or shape in specific areas of a knitted garment.
  • Garter stitch neckband: The neckband is worked in a simple garter stitch pattern — alternating knit and purl rounds — to create a tidy, slightly textured edge that lies flat.

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette stitch: The primary stitch pattern for the body and sleeves, worked in the round by knitting every round. Gauge is set at 22 stitches and 28 rows to 4 inches in stockinette on the larger needles.
  • Garter stitch: Used for the neckband, worked by alternating knit rounds and purl rounds when working in the round.
  • Stranded colorwork pattern: A charted two-colour motif worked across the yoke section.
  • K2tog (knit two together): A standard right-leaning decrease used for shaping throughout the pattern.
