Product Description

Zingiber is a cozy top-down cardigan with raglan sleeves, striking cable details, cabled patch pockets, and a hood. This design was named after the Zingiber genus, the Latin name for a family of many warming plants like ginger, turmeric, and cardamom.

Zingiber features a wide four-leaf cable panel running down the back on a reverse stockinette background. The body is straight, making this unisex hoodie fit all body shapes. The hood — which can optionally be left out — is worked last and shaped with short rows.

The pattern comes in eight sizes and is written with both metric and US terminology. Both written and charted instructions are given for all cable patterns.

Gauge: 17.5 sts × 28 rows = 10 cm / 4" in reverse stockinette on larger needles, blocked

Zingiber Cardigan by Susanna Winter

What is Being Made

Zingiber is a top-down cardigan with an integrated hood, designed as an unisex garment that accommodates all body shapes with a straight body silhouette. Named after the Zingiber genus—the Latin name for warming plants including ginger, turmeric, and cardamom—this design combines functional style with decorative cable work. The cardigan features raglan sleeves, cabled patch pockets, and an optional hood that can be left out of the finished garment if preferred.

Construction and Design Features

This cardigan is constructed using the top-down method, allowing knitters to try on the garment as it progresses and adjust length as needed. The hood is worked last and shaped using short rows for a custom fit. The body maintains a straight construction throughout, making it suitable for various body types without complex shaping.

The most striking design element is a wide four-leaf cable panel that runs down the back of the cardigan against a reverse stockinette background. Cabled patch pockets add textural interest and coordinate with the back panel design. The combination of cables and reverse stockinette creates visual depth and dimension.

Knitting Techniques Used

  • Top-down construction method
  • Raglan sleeve shaping
  • Short-row shaping for hood construction
  • Cable knitting and manipulation
  • Reverse stockinette stitch as background texture
  • Patch pocket attachment

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

  • Stockinette stitch (primary fabric)
  • Reverse stockinette stitch (background for cable panels)
  • Four-leaf cable panel (back detail)
  • Cable stitches throughout pocket details

Both written and charted instructions are provided for all cable patterns, allowing knitters to follow their preferred method of instruction. This dual-instruction approach makes the pattern accessible to knitters with different learning styles.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

Zingiber is designed for aran and worsted weight yarns, providing structure and definition to the cable details while maintaining drape in the body. The pattern comes in eight sizes ranging from XS to 3XL, accommodating a wide range of finished measurements. Knitters will need appropriate needles for their chosen yarn weight, with the pattern providing both metric and US needle size terminology to suit international knitters.

Pattern Details and Difficulty

This is an advanced-level knitting pattern suitable for experienced knitters comfortable with cable work, raglan construction, and short-row shaping. The pattern was originally published in Making Stories Issue 2 and is available as a downloadable PDF.

The pattern includes comprehensive sizing information with eight distinct sizes and provides instructions in both metric and US terminology, making it accessible to knitters worldwide. The inclusion of both written and charted cable instructions ensures clarity for complex stitch patterns.
