Product Description
This is a beautiful jacket that will be perfect for chilly autumn days. I designed the dress with the poppy field near our house in mind. I knew that is wear I wanted to photograph it. The sleeve ruffle looks complicated but it is incredibly easy! Cannot wait to see which colour you will choose.
The Poppy Coat by The Moule Hole
Project Overview
The Poppy Coat is a beginner-friendly crochet jacket designed by The Moule Hole. This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for creating a wearable button-front coat suitable for crocheters new to garment construction.
What Is Being Made
The Poppy Coat is a structured crochet jacket featuring a classic button-front closure. The design includes sleeves and edging details, making it a complete outerwear piece that combines functionality with handmade craftsmanship.
Crochet Techniques Used
This pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques appropriate for beginners learning garment assembly. The construction utilizes basic stitch work combined with shaping methods to create a fitted jacket silhouette. Sleeve edging is worked separately using a finer hook to create a refined finish, demonstrating how changing hook sizes affects fabric texture and structure.
Stitches Used
- Chain stitch (ch) - the foundation stitch used to create base chains and turning chains throughout the pattern
- Slip stitch (sl st) - used for joining rounds and creating seamless transitions between sections
- Single crochet (sc) - a tight, dense stitch providing structure and stability
- Half double crochet (hdc) - the primary stitch used throughout the main body, creating the gauge of 15 stitches over 12 rows in a 10cm x 10cm square
- Half double crochet two together (hdc 2tog) - a decrease stitch used for shaping the jacket
Materials and Specifications
Yarn: Aran weight (worsted weight) yarn is required. The pattern was designed using Hayfield Aran Bonus, a blend containing 20% wool, in the colorway Deep Red. Approximately 400g of yarn is needed, though the PDF includes a chart specifying exact yardage requirements for different sizes.
Tools: A 5.00mm (U.S. H-8) crochet hook is used for the main body to achieve the specified gauge. A 4.00mm (U.S. G-6) hook is used for sleeve edging to create a tighter, more refined finish. A tapestry needle is required for weaving in ends and finishing.
Notions: The pattern calls for 5 to 9 buttons measuring 3/4 inch in diameter, allowing customization based on desired button spacing and closure style.
Difficulty Level
Rated as a beginner project, The Poppy Coat is designed to be accessible to crocheters new to garment making. The straightforward stitch selection and basic shaping techniques make this an ideal pattern for developing foundational skills in constructing wearable items.
